While campaigning in Milwaukee, he was shot in the chest, but still resumed his speech (White House, 2009). Roosevelt displayed a great amount of courage and determination during that event. In 1898, he organized the Rough Riders; they were much publicized for charging up Kettle Hill in the battle for San Juan, which he led (PBS Interactive, 2001). In the Spanish-American War he served as a lieutenant colonel (White House). Theodore Roosevelt was a very courageous man; he fought in the war, took on presidential office, and hunted in some of the most ferocious land in Africa.

(Gallay, 2011) Indentured servants were men, women, and sometimes children from England who signed a contract with a master to serve them for four to seven years. They exchanged their service for passage from England to the New World, for food, clothing, and shelter. (Stratford Hall, 2012) After their contract was over, the servant was given food, clothing, tools, and land of their own. Indentured servants were mostly white English people, but in 1619 a group of twenty Africans arrived in Virginia. Those twenty Africans were sold to the settlers of Jamestown from a captain of a Dutch man-of-war.

Biography of Allan Pinkerton Allan Pinkerton’s History 7/24/2011 Axia College Debbie Dennis Allan J. Pinkerton was born in Glasgow, Scotland on August 25, 1819 and died in Chicago, Illinois on July 1, 1884 at the age of 64. He was the son of a police sergeant that was disabled due to work related injuries. Pinkerton began to work as an apprentice barrel maker to support the family, but a short while later joined a political group (Chartist Movement) dedicated to improve work conditions for the poor. On the run, Pinkerton at the age of 28, and his new bride of only one day fled to Canada in 1842, where a shipwreck off the coast of Nova Scotia left them without any means supporting themselves. He then for a year began to work as cooper for a brewery in Chicago, though still dreaming of starting his own business.

This was sort of a shift from what Europeans originally used Africa for, which was the trading of slaves and gold. Everything Europeans needed was accessible on the Western coast of Africa, resulting in the interior to rarely be ventured. One man who argued that slavery was inefficient was Scottish philosopher Adam Smith.
Colonialism is the expansion of a nation's control over territory beyond its borders and has direct political and economic control over the country and its people. European colonialism began as early as in the fifteenth century with the Portuguese and Spanish exploration of the Americas, the coasts of Africa and India. However it was not until the 17th century that Britain, France and Holland established their overseas colonies. The Berlin Conference of 1884 decided which European countries get which territories in Africa which led to the most rapid form of European expansion called the ‘Scramble for Africa’ which took place between 1886 and 1914. The countries involved in the ‘Scramble for Africa’ were Britain, France, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Germany and Italy.

Chinua Achebe was born in the Igbo town of Ogidi in south-eastern Nigeria, on the 16th November 1930 (now 80). Achebe had won a scholarship for undergraduate studies and became a student of the first University in Nigeria. There Achebe became fascinated with world religions and traditional African culture and started to write stories. After graduation Chinua Achebe worked for the Nigerian broadcasting and moved to the metropolis of Lagos where he continued to write.
