INVESTIGATION INTO CAREERS IN HAIR AND BEAUTY The hair industry in Ireland is big business, even though there is no exact count on the number of salons I know there are at least 3092 as that is the count on our largest online hairdresser’s directory hairdressing.ie. If you go to any small town or village in Ireland you are sure to find a hair salon, whether it be a small locally owned shop or a large chain. In bawnogue alone there are 3 hair salons all within two minutes walking distance of each other, this proves there is money to be made. Even though the recession has hit hard and some salons have closed and more still may close there are also new shops opening up and competing for business like never before. I think this is exactly what the hair dressing industry needed. I think for too long people had money to spend and they didn’t really notice what on or how much they were spending, which lead to a lot of hairdressers bumping up prices and really lacking on their service skills. Now that the market is tougher salons need to re think how they can keep clients coming back and also how to find new business. This can be seen with the mid week specials salons are offering to get more customers in on their less busy days, and also by the price drop seen on treatments in many salons around the country. Although lower prices is a good thing for the consumer a price that is too low can also not be maintained by the salons and if they are undercutting themselves on price it is only a matter of time before it catches up on them and they won’t be able to survive. Salons still need to be making a profit too continue doing business. If given a choice as a customer, although I want to pay a reasonable price for my treatment I also believe how you are treated while you are there plays a huge role on whether you come back. I think the way to keep your clients coming
