Tom punches her and breaks her nose. Nick also attends one of Gatsby’s extravagant Saturday night parties where he engages in conversation with Jordan Baker and an unnamed man who is later revealed to be Gatsby. Gatsby then requisitions Jordan, and tells her an “amazing thing” that she cannot repeat to anyone. After attending a brief lunch with Gatsby and his shady business partner, Meyer Wolfsheim, Nick meets with Jordan and learns the “amazing” story: Gatsby met and fell in love with Daisy before The Great War, and bought his West Egg mansion simply to be near her and impress her. At Gatsby’s request, Nick arranges a meeting between Gatsby and Daisy.
Daisy remarks to Nick when recounting the birth of her girl 'that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool'. This is a very important part of the film because it underlines one of the main themes: women's rights. Daisy says this but she doesn't really believe it and although she knows that this is attitude is wrong; she doesn't do anything about it. This shows the weak part of her nature and how she is not willing to stand up against what is not right. Later in the film, Daisy rebels against the lack of women's rights but she does not succeed and then loses all hope and becomes a 'beautiful little fool'.
Roo in “The Summer of The Seventeenth Doll.”) Fitzgerald makes it very clear to us that Tom is “A hulking man” by how the other characters in the book refer to him. One could note that Daisy Buchanan (Tom’s wife) several times claims Tom to be “A hulk”, “A brute”, etc. Tom is also shown by Fitzgerald to be a very abusive, short tempered man. Some undeniable evidence of this is when he backhands Myrtle Wilson (his mistress) across the face, breaking her nose in the process. Fitzgerald also reveals bruises on
The Great Gatsby is a story told by Nick Carraway, who was once Gatsby's neighbor, and he tells the story sometime after 1922, when the incidents that fill the book take place. As the story opens, Nick has just moved from the Midwest to West Egg, Long Island, seeking his fortune as a bond salesman. Shortly after his arrival, Nick travels across the Sound to the more fashionable East Egg to visit his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband, Tom, a hulking, imposing man whom Nick had known in college. There he meets professional golfer Jordan Baker. The Buchanans and Jordan Baker live privileged lives, contrasting sharply in sensibility and luxury with Nick's more modest and grounded lifestyle.

November 7th, 2013 Assignment 2- Reunion by John Cheever Reunion by John Cheever is a short story narrated through the eyes of Charlie, a young boy who is meeting with his father for lunch who he hasn’t seen in three years due to his parent’s divorce. The two central characters in the story are Charlie and his father whose name is not given. The setting for the story is in New York City. It starts at Grand Central Station and then it moves on to 4 different types of restaurants. The author uses irony, conflict, humor, and grotesque throughout the story and I think he used these literary devices quite well.
