IS THE GOVERNMENT BIG ENOUGH TO GIVE ALL YOU WANT AND TAKE AWAY ALL YOU WANT? I disagree with the opinion that the government is big enough to give and take all I want given the infinity and diversity of human wants. In my opinion, the government is hardly big enough to take care of my basic needs which are definite and limited. In this regard, a line must be drawn between needs and wants. Whereas needs are basic necessities that people cannot do without like food, clothing, shelter, clean water, healthcare, security and education, wants are what one desires to make life comfortable and easy and are not easy to gratify as they are abstract and varying from person to person. It is therefore impossible for the government to come up with clear policies of gratifying peoples wants not to mention its incapability to provide the same. Taking the government’s ability to take away all we want to mean eradicating factors that make life difficult, I also refute the government’s ability on grounds that life’s impediments are equally abstract, enormous and unpredictable. In general no single government can be big enough to give and take all her peoples’ wants. It should also be taken into account that some people live without or with unstable governments. As an alien in a foreign country where I have grown up as a refugee following protracted civil war in my country, Sudan, am talking from the school of life’s experience. For time immemorial, governments have co- existed with other social institutions in a bid to augment in the endeavor to take care of various human needs and this is an indication that the government alone is not big enough to contain everything. Even in well established governments, there co –exist opposition blocks, rebel forces and many other disgruntled elements meaning that their formidable wants and interests are not provided for in the
