The Golden Triangle is a illegal opium-producing area. It is an area of around 350,000 square kilometers that overlaps the mountains of four countries of Southeast Asia: Burma, Laos, and Thailand. The opium production in the Golden Triangle is fading and transformed into a tourism location. History of the Golden Triangle is very deep and interesting like the opium plant alike. The decreasing of production of opium was vital on making a popular tourist destination. The Golden Triangle once was a huge provider of opium producing poppies but with many influenced from organizations and the government the farming of opium is demolished and instead a popular tourist destination. One of the popular characters of the Golden Triangle was Khun Sa a drug lord who thrived in the region. He was a heroin trafficker leader in the Golden Triangle, the area encompassing the northern reaches of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand. His drug empire traded opium for guns and used the weapons to take control over large Shan region. (The New York Times)While a distracting ethnic and communist rebellion was going on the opium production in the Golden Triangle blew up producing over 3,000 tons in 1989 alone. Most of the Golden Triangle’s Heroin from the opium was transported to western countries; the US became the destination of the most heroins. Even though the production of heroin in Burma was dominate the countries like Thailand and Laos where suppressing the production of heroin and fighting to stop the problem.
