A Perfect World What is considered a perfect world? “The Giver” by Lois Lowry, is a story about a community that appears to be (1) an ideal and flawless creation; but, not really. It is well known that (2) nothing is ever perfect. (3) There are always factors that influence the reality and perceptions of what is impeccable and realistically euphoric. As this story unveils, Jonas intertwines what seems to be his perfect community with the reality of (4) truth. (5) Once truth, knowledge, and emotion are encompassed; life reveals it’s self as imperfectly unique; full of choice, wonder, imperfection, and universal growth. In Jonas’ world, people live an existence without feelings, colors, or choices. The community he resides in strives for “the sameness,” a concept that prohibits all from anything that can make a singular individual different in any way from any other person. The result of “the sameness” is perfection. In the controlled environment of this story, perfection is a twisted concept of reality. An example of the brutality “perfection” inflicts comes early on in the story. An object flying across the sky crashes down in the community. The pilot is silently captured, and an announcement is made over the loud speaker for all to hear. The voice announces that the pilot was lost and he has been “released”. The meaning of release (death) is unknown to all but those whose job it is to perform said task. As Jonas progresses; he is shown the grave truth about how harmful it is to be perfect. A life without emotion, choices, and truth is no life at all. As the story unfolds the idealistics of the community twist into a menacing imperfect way of living. Conflict unravels between having freedom of choice and solving problems in society. The community is comprised of deceit, murder, and oppression.
