Harry is finding his way back home because he wants to see his ‘home-folk’, meaning the people from his home. He was also going back to find and marry his lover. This theme has been shown through the alliteration that Lawson uses in the second stanza, of soft sounds which create a pleasant mood. This is the mood that Harry is feeling, and this is probably the only reason that Harry keeps on going; because he is determined to see his loved-ones.
Gary wants to break away from poverty and keep the next generation out of working in the fields or factories. The thought of having such a life like his parents made him scared and he overcame all of it as he explains in his book. Gary also, writes about the power television had on his siblings and on himself helps him to be where he is now. He is poet and enjoys life with his wife and
This quote offers clean evidence of McCandless’ willingness to continue climbing while ignoring the reality that his family was exhausted which was a potential danger. Here, McCandless’ attitude started to illustrate the rebelliousness that his father foreshadowed. His family was in total agreement that McCandless felt that “the odds did not [apply] to him. We were always trying to pull him back from the edge” (109). His family attempted to exercise some guidance in order to protect McCandless.

For this the gods blessed him. The way Argos relates to Odysseus’s part of the passage is how just like the way Odysseus wanted his mother to wait for him, Argos wanted to see his master once again before he died. Argos got his way and with his hateful illness draining his limbs of power his wish came true just before he passed away. Argos was there the whole story seeing everything unfold and he longed for his master to be home in order for him to die peacefully. Argos knew his master was coming and stayed alive just to see him return.
The tone in this brings more emotion into the poem, and at times can be very theatrical. In the first stanza it has a hint of depression and resentment is the tone the reader will first experience when they read the poem. While later in the poem it gets switched to irony. “All the proud fathers are ashamed to go home.”(Wright 6) This seems that the fathers are just really on edge and their kids just want to please them on the field and make them proud. Throughout this poem a lot of tone flows through it, it helps the reader understand the deep emotion he is putting in the
Slim is almost the prince of the ranch that everyone respects and looks up to for inspiration. This gives us an insight of how some ranch workers are treated compared to other, for example when Curley comes to look for his wife he is questioning the itinerant workers, but when he questions slim, he is sarcastic towards Curley by giving a dead out answer. To the readers surprise a reaction hasn’t been given from Curley and he walks off. This indicates how much respect that Slim has. If that was any other worker Curley would have made them know about answering him back.
Written in the 1930’s, this particular literature is based around the aforementioned nomadic lifestyle, as implied by the title ‘Drifters’. During the first stanza, Dawe describes how the children and family pet would be ecstatic when the husband tells his wife to start packing. “The kids will yell ‘Truly’ and get wildly excited”. This implies that they do not understand the consequences of the act of moving from their current place to the next residential area. It may be assumed that they’d only see the more adventurous side of the act rather than its consequences.
Krakauer’s childhood was a life outdoors and full of adventure, which was brought on by his father. Throughout his entire life he had a passion for mountaineering and climbing, and inevitably gave him a motivation to write about the outdoors and climbing. McCandless shows some of the qualities that Krakauer possesses; he has no fear of what may come next, and has the guts to try anything to challenge himself. McCandless was a rebelled toward his upper-class society which raised him and ran away without a destination. He did this to find what the world is actually like without
He also depicts the state the farmers and their families are in. The men of the household seem to be standing strong and still thinking of a way out of this mess while the wives and children look to their husbands and dads for reassurance. The Dust Bowl occurred during Steinbeck’s lifetime so he must’ve taken inspiration from families that
