The Future of Education Public education has been one of the greatest contributors to the United States success and emergence as a world superpower. For the past century, the enlightened ideology of providing every citizen with an education has helped to create well rounded members of society, prevent crime and poverty, and unify our nation. The current day education system is responsible for producing some of the most predominant members of society, however, it is also producing more and more individuals who are far less thriving. Major sources of the education system’s inefficiency stem from inconsistencies in the quality of education offered, increasing emphasis on standardized testing and outdated ideologies. In the past few decades there has been an increasing focus on the placement of students in different curriculums based on their calculated academic potential. There are a multitude of tests which serve to determine if children are prepared for school, indentify and diagnose learning disabilities, and place them in specific tracks according to their intelligence. The reason this system is unsuccessful is because of the variations in the academic backgrounds of each individual student. Students are more likely to perform poorly on these tests when they come from low income and minority-group families, not necessarily because of a lack of intelligence, but instead a lack of exposure to proper academic resources (The National). While some students are assigned into advanced placement, academically gifted, and college prep courses, the others are placed in courses with slower paced and less demanding curriculums which only contribute to them falling further behind. The current system tries to measure an individual’s academic level or potential by taking a quick random sample of one’s intelligence, and using it to represent what type of learner they
