There are two books, from British authors, that are known by almost everybody in this world - J.R.R Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” and Joanne K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter”. If you have a closer look on both books, you might notice some similarities - especially the great wizards Albus Dumbledore and Gandalf. Both characters act like a father to their protégés. Their behavior towards them is typically for a father figure. They are careful and playful and teach them what the right thing to do is, but sometimes also leave them in the dark about important things that seem to overcharge them. Gandalf and Dumbledore both care about the “children”. Dumbledore is personally present, when Harry was brought to the Dursleys. It’s not common, that a great wizard like him is interested in a baby. He also visits him when he is in hospital, after meeting Voldemort for the first time, after his parents were killed. He tells him about everything what happened, in a way, a father would talk to his son. In addition, Dumbledore gives Harry presents, not directly, but yet this isn’t usual for an ordinary teacher-pupil relationship. He makes it possible that Harry gets a good broom for his first Quidditch game in “The philosopher’s stone”. Gandalf also is interested in Frodo’s and Bilbo’s well-being. In “The Fellowship of the Ring”, Gandalf sacrifices himself to protect Frodo and the whole fellowship when he fights against the Balrog. In “The Hobbit” he is very glad and relieved when he saw Bilbo alive after the fight against the orcs for the Lonely Mountain. As you can see by Gandalf’s example both wizards also sacrifice themselves to protect their protégés. Gandalf didn’t only kill Balrog, he also died in this battle, but he came back from death, after Eru gave him new life, so he could protect the hobbit’s journey. In the battle against the orcs, who want to conquer the Lonely
