The different definitions of family according to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary are a group of individuals living under one roof and usually under one head. This movie is set in a commune named “Tillsammans” meaning (which means “together”) together in Swedish. It contains many occupants that each have their individual problems and together they help each other work out their problems. Its residents consist of people who, although they have their own individual problems, they take it upon themselves to ease the problems of others within the commune. Lukas Moodysson shows in this film that the commune can function as a collective group and a family that can work “together”. A collective is a place where people who share common problems or similar situations live in harmony with one another. Within this collective, the people help each other cope with their struggles and find happiness as one unit. In this movie, a man by the name of Goran, is the creator of this specific collective. A person who wants everybody to be happy and living in harmony, he is naturally the head of the commune. He shows his compassion for the commune, and the unity it brings to the people when he explains to the children that the collective is “like porridge,” and that the more the pot cooks, the people “become warm and soft, part of something bigger than ourselves.” His analogy for the commune shows that he truly believes that the collective is the binding ingredient to these people, and their happiness together.
