In addition to legal and physical hardships involved with immigration there can also be cultural hardships. American have a distinct culture which can strongly conflict with that of the country of origin. Large immigrant population tend to stick together in districts or neighborhoods but generations inevitably branch out and fully integrate, until eventually the languages from the homeland stop being passed down. But just as America changes the immigrants, the immigrants also change America. This is the 'melting pot' theory that everyone brings a little piece of the homeland culture with them which over time become adopted into American culture as well.
Critical Summary Gonzalez, N. (2005). Beyond culture: The Hybridity of Funds of Knowledge, (pp. 29-46). Culture has been the main influence of an individual’s lifestyle. We become accustomed to each of our own cultural traditions that we sometimes forget that we all have different ways of expressing our culture.
Cultural differences and similarities characterize human societies everywhere in the world. Often, we do not examine our own cultural ideals and customs until we are exposed to another culture. The Hispanic and American cultures have many similarities and many differences. The topics I have chosen to explore are marketplaces, the use of last names, the custom of taking naps, and family structure. El Mercado.
they bring culture and different food to America a taste of their culture. They show us different parts of how they lived and their language. They are like us but yet we discriminate against them so much. They want the same things in life as we do. So why do Americans take away their chance to have a better life?
They were not inventing anything new but reclaiming something ancient. This is why governments tend to fall apart, because people often want to come together freely and be themselves, rather then fit a mold that is presented for them. Hobbes foretold that it was a human condition that war fought by each against each, making it hard for anything good to come out of it, or learn
This is simply “viewing people’s behavior form the perspective of their own culture” (Schaefer, 2012, p. 54). As Americans, most of us are proud of our culture and what we believe. However, this does not mean that just because another culture chooses to live their lives differently, they are somehow “wrong”. It also does not make the way we live “right”. While the Nacrima’s practices seem strange to us, as Miner has written about them, cultural relativism is an important practice in our daily lives.
They can be successful by working together as one. As a citizen, be trustworthy and follow your natural instinct of being good person. As a government, don’t be seen as a domination force. Trust the people and leave them alone. If a country is directed intelligently, its natives will be content.
Through learned language from childhood, to adolescence, and to adulthood that the human being expresses feelings, thoughts, wants, and needs. Language mirror the human society and is the medium for its values. Best minds created and shaped language but is only good and only useful if recognized, absorbed, and understood (Kirby, Goodpaster, 1999). Thus, language is an important medium use in communication between people, nation, and
Assimilation There are many people around the world who want to change their lives and make it better. Some of them leave their homes, their friends, their countries and come to the United States to find a better life here. For some newcomers the only way they can survive is living in their national communities, neighborhoods, but others try to assimilate to American people. Assimilation implies that people should forget their background to become a part of a new society. Although many people think that all immigrants should go through assimilation, however I believe that people can become a part of other culture without erasing their own background, because of several reasons.
They can value and celebrate differences in others rather than maintain an ethnocentric stance and can demonstrate comfort with differences between themselves and others. They have an awareness of personal and professional limitations that may warrant the referral of a client to another victim service provider or agency that can best meet the clients' needs. Self-awareness also helps in understanding the process of cultural identity formation and helps guard against stereotyping. As one develops the diversity within one’s own group, one can be more open to the diversity within other groups. Cultural competence also requires victim service providers to appreciate how workers need to move from cultural awareness to cultural sensitivity before achieving cultural competence, and to evaluate growth and development throughout these different levels of cultural competence in practice.
