Robert Mitchell Prof. Jackson English 370 3/24/15 The Effects of Fast Food Everybody knows that fast food is bad for you. Fast food is full of what are called “empty calories,” meaning that there is little to no nutritional value. Fast food also contains extremely high amounts of sodium. Consuming a high amount of fast food over time has many negative effects on the body. Examples of these effects are increased body weight and poor health. There is the increase in body weight. This increase is from when the body brakes down the carbohydrates in the food and turns them into sugars. The unused sugars are then stored as fat. This extra body fat then puts extra strain on the entire body. For example the extra weight gain will but strain on a persons’ leg and hip joints which will then make it very painful to walk over time. The extra weight also puts a strain on the heart because the body has to work harder to move the extra weight. This strain on the heart increases a person’s chance to have a heart attack or hear failure. The increase in extra carbs being digested causes blood sugar levels to spike and insulin resistance to develop. This eventually leads to diabetes. The high amounts of sodium contained in fast food causes the body to retain water which leads to inflammation. High amounts of sodium also contribute to high blood pressure. “People who eat fast food are 51 percent more likely to develop depression than those who eat little to no fast food. It was also found that the more fast food they consumed, the more likely study participants were to develop depression” (healthline.com). Depression is known to have many other serious effects on the body such as insomnia, fatigue and decreased immune system (WebMD.com). With a decreased immune system, a person in then at risk of become ill from a large number of diseases that are normally prevented. Eating
