Abstract The rate of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in sexual assault survivors is even higher than what is reported in combat situations . Increased knowledge of the difficulties associated with rape trauma in biological, psychological and sociological areas may help to develop more effective treatments for survivors. Pharmacotherapies are available to treat PTSD, however, they are often inadequate or unwanted by the survivor. Mental health is often compromised following sexual trauma and many psychological therapies are available, but with varying results. A person's thought patterns have a dramatic effect on the onset, severity, and progress of PTSD following sexual assault.
Vulnerable Population: Self-Awareness Paper Rose Buckle June 18, 2012 University of Phoenix Nursing 440 Sharon Cook-Litschauer * The most common attributes shared by groups currently identified as vulnerable in the United States include the following (a) having a downgraded sociocultural status, (b) having limited access to economic resources, or (c) belonging to a certain age and gender group (Chesnay, 2012, p. 5). The LGBT or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender group is such a population. The confusion amongst individuals in LGBT groups regarding their sexual identity or sexual orientation makes this group vulnerable to much discrimination in today’s society in the United States. * According to Gates (2011) the population of LGBT in the United States is approximately 9 million individuals. Gates reports that an estimated 0.3% of the LGBT population in the United States is made up of transgender individuals.
How do the media represent disabilities? “Media coverage plays a crucial role in educating the public on disability issues” People are influenced by many media sources; these images affect our perceptions in many ways. What we see, hear and read in the media is often decided and influenced by a small group of decision makers. These editors, producers, programmers and budget-controllers are swayed by their own opinions of disability and what they believe will bring in audiences. They output dominant ideologies with which they mould society into obedience, shaping Britain in to a society who mostly agree with their hegemonic superiors.
Starpower has illustrated several social psychological principles which were not only present during the game, but are also highly relevant within our contemporary society. These principles through empirical research are the concepts of perception and attribution processes, role playing and simulation. It is with these concepts that allow social and cognitive psychologists to examine why we behave and think the way we think about the social world. How do we interpret and analyse the information we encounter? Are the truth(s) we discover reliable, or are we all biased and influenced by our own feelings and pre-existing knowledge.
They should have the same rights as everyone else in the community. In more ways than most people think, people with disabilities can be productive in society. An analysis of all the people with disabilities reveals that they are discriminated against ultimately because of the way they look; considered the biggest minority because they have the highest rate of unemployment, poverty, and lowest education of any minority. People with disabilities is by far the largest minority group in the United States and anybody can become a member at any time. Transgenderism as Seen in The L Word In today’s popular media, most relationships between characters tend to be cisgendered and heteronormative in nature. Although the presence of heterosexual characters is becoming more apparent in modern media, Transgenderism is generally disregarded. However, in the Showtime drama The L Word, a female-to-male transgendered individual is one of the most popular and influential characters within the series. The character, altering their name from Moira to Max, comes to terms with their identity and begins the gender transitioning process in hope of permanently altering their sex from female to male. By televising the struggles of members of the transgender community with scenes of transgender prejudice, the female-to-male transitioning process, and the separation of sexual orientation from gender, The L Word is able to move beyond the confines of stereotypical gay television characters and is able to create a fairly accurate representation of conflicts that may arise for those within the transgender community.
