Influences on operations management have multiple effects on businesses. An understanding of external influences can help a business be able to manage and respond to them efficiently by implementing various strategies which can make a business successful. Influences on operations management include Globalisation, quality expectations, cost-based competition, technology, government policies, legal regulations and environmental sustainability. Globalisation refers to the removal of trade barriers between nations, and is defined as the integration and interdependence of national economies forming a global economy. Apple recognised early advantages of globalisation and implemented various strategies to expand internationally which results in wide range of their stores all over the world now.
McDonald’s started investing in Chipotle in February of 1998, and supported them financially for seven years.1 This financial backing enabled Chipotle to expand nationally and become large enough to offer stock. In 2006, Chipotle and McDonald’s went their separate ways in order to focus more on each company’s core activities. Currently Chipotle operates 956 restaurants in 35 states in the United States, the District of Columbia, and Canada.2 The company is expected to open up between 120 and 130 new restaurants in the upcoming year. Panera Bread Case Study Introduction Panera Bread is expanding quickly across North America, operating 1,388 company-owned and franchise-operated bakery-cafes in 40 states and in Ontario Canada as of March 30, 2010, under the Panera Bread®, Saint Louis Bread Co. ® and Paradise Bakery & Café® names. Panera Bread reported sales of 829 million dollars and met income of 58.8 million dollars in 2006. Panera Bread bakery-cafes totaled 1.2 billion dollars in 2006. In 2005, for the fourth consecutive year, Panera Bread was rated among the best o f 121 competitors in the Sandleman&Associates national customer satisfaction survey of more than 62000 consumers.
