We rarely think completely about where the food we eat comes from and how is it produced. "Food, Inc.", a frank and sometimes grisly expose of the profit-driven food profession in the United States, is sure to shake up our views of what we eat. Factory system was conveyed to the back of the kitchen, after which food began to be formed on assembly lines. From the film, we can see that health and safety are frequently ignored by those companies, and are often overlooked by government in an struggle to provide cheap food heedlessly of these bad penalties. According to data, 70% of antibiotics are used on farm animals.
However, some of the smaller ranchers had to sell to their larger neighboring ranchers. Income was too low for these small ranchers to maintain business. Many ranchers were focused on seeking way to cut costs by reducing the amount of animal healthcare products purchased and switching to other alternatives that would lower costs. 2. To what degree is a high quality/premium price position a strength or liability during an industry downturn?
The corn based agriculture industry exists because of economy to scale and economical production which equates into globalization of food markets. The government is subsidizing the corn fed or monoculture farms because grain is a commodity and this provides them with gross national product and thus giving an advantage in the global economy. Romig states “The intense grain diet of conventional cattle, increases bovine indigestion raising the likelihood of bacterial infections among the herds which is why preventive antibiotics are used (Romig, 2013, p. 115). The antibiotics that are given to cattle are passed over to the human system after consuming the product and therefore creating problems over time. The grass-fed beef is produced without the use of antibiotics and hormones so nothing unnatural is passed to the consumer.
Big Industry Farming Deshavira Harden Adv. Comp 135 6/10/12 Bret Fuller Big Industry Farming The purpose of this paper is to show the relationship between big industry farming takeover of the American Food Supply, has lead to the decline in the American Food Supply. During the past 20 years or so more and more small farms find it harder to make a living, or are simply having to go out of business. This leaves the average American with little to no choice when it comes to what is in their foods, and how the foods they consume are produced. This has taken place because, Big Industry has taken over Farming in America; this is not good because it produces a monopoly, and it also leaves no place for people to buy local food.
While traditional farming choose to grow organic produce and struggle to keep their businesses alive. In Jeffrey M. Smith book, Genetic Roulette the intro talks about the experements they had with animals and the GMO foods. Many of the animals organs were becoming defecting or mutated over time. After looking at the results, animals that consume the modifications continusly it can lead to serious health risks. In addition the animal’s lifespan was shortened and their offspring a lower chance of survival.
Exploring new ways of shopping can be scary because it is breaking away from old habits and subjecting one’s self to change. Instead of buying meat from the local stores, when the meat comes from plants that feed the live stock corn, research the local area for small farmers who sell whole chickens, pigs, cows, goats and so on. When reaching out to these farmers do not be shy and directly ask, “Are you feeding your live stock industrial corn feed?” This might take a few times but eventually one famer will respond with, “No, I feed my live stock their natural food sources such as Alfa, for the cows.” This is a good sign that when buying from this famer an element of hidden corn will be eliminated from the diet. Every state has gun laws and hunting laws. Find out what these laws are and take action by hunting wild game and using the meat of animals who only serve off the land and surroundings, such wild game like, deer, elk, fish, duck, turkey and geese.
Sadly because corn is not in the normal diet for these animals it can and it is harmful not only to the environment but also on human health. Pollan who was informing us of all this information then goes on to say the feces from the animals at the immensely large farms can in fact pollute water supplies of the surrounding areas. The film then goes into a truly touching story from a lady named Barbara Kowalcyk, whom is extremely passionate about food safety, because her 2 year old son had been infected with E.coli and had sadly passed away. Barbara was followed throughout the film while she was working to get a law passed, Kevin’s law, for
Genetically modified organisms are the forefront of scientifically modified crops in the food industry today. Genetically modified means organisms that has had it genetic makeup altered using genetic engineering. This type of genetic engineering has mixed response with the food industry and people who are involved in sustainable development, meaning there are people who think that it is the forefront for the next generation and there are also people who think that it is the worst thing to do for our generation. In today’s society there is many different views on the matter especially when it involves the big chain supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Waitrose, Marks and Spencer’s etc. Big supermarkets like Tesco, Waitrose has expressed that GM crops are banned in their supermarkets due to their customers wanting the purest products available on the market therefore their customers will not buy their products if they sell GM products.
Farmers believed they could raise more livestock indoors in cramped quarters. But that soon became an issue because of disease. Over the years factory farming has become cruel and unjust not to mention unsafe for animals and for those humans who consume these animals from factory farming. Factory farming is inhumane; animals are being drugged, slaughtered and kept in cages until they have reached full maturity, then slaughtered and sold for human consumption. This act towards animals, have two sides.
Although pesticides and antibiotics are heavily used to keep poultry chickens protected from diseases. Moreover, recent studies have shown that excess of protein intake in a person’s diet leads to the loss of bone calcium as meat eaters generally get for more protein then they actually need or can use. So, in order to live a healthy and long life span one should switch from non-vegetarian to vegetarian or vegan diet. On the other hand, most vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories.
