Even the hardest of people need somebody to talk to every once in a while. Over the next few paragraphs of the letter, the writer indirectly indicates her loneliness; personifying her cat and going over her day and her work routine and her daily surroundings with extraordinary details. “I, too, walk to work, through the fudgy air and over clumps of moss. The first month we were here I couldn't walk without stopping to touch the fallen clumps. They looked like wig hair, damaged and knotted, but felt like duck feathers.” It is typical for a fiction story to describe surroundings with such detail, but since this was written as a letter to someone, the use of detail is used to emphasize the loneliness of the writer, since she probably has nobody else to listen to what she has to say.
Through the movie her father starts dating and gets engaged to a woman whom tries to help Vada with her emotional feelings. The story line takes a turn when Vada best friend dies from bee stings while trying to retrieve her mood ring she lost in the woods. Vada is in her middle childhood and that is a rough time for most girls at this age. Vada spends time worrying about herself and how she is changing physically. Vada is also a becoming a hypochondriac and misconceptions of death and how that evolves in her world.
Obviously, the conflict between Lysandra and Elaine is shown by Lysandra being so mad she withdraws on her dream to be to herself. Lysandra also shows jealousy towards Elaine. She does this by stealing Elaine’s boyfriend. Elaine explains how Lysandra does this by saying, “As she and Brett moved off into the darkness the looked like one person. That’s how close they were.” (72).
In turn this event began to eat at her father’s ability to stay present for his daughters, leaving only Tana to be there for Pearl. Years later, Tana has been given the Cold and Pearl is now left with no one there for her. This character is easy to sympathize with because she has gone through many hardships at a young age, and is left with no family to care for her Next, the author makes it so that the reader can easily sympathize with Tana. This is because Tana is used and attacked by her mother, who was unable to control her temptations. The Cold makes you thirsty for human blood and Tana’s mother manipulated her and appealed to her naivety by saying that she changed and was better.
When she became poor Esperanza still felt that she was above all of the poor people she was now living and working with. It took time for Esperanza to realize that she was also poor; a changing moment in the novel was when she held hands with Sylvia. Rayona hates it more than anything that when she goes anywhere, people poke fun at her and make racial remarks to her which makes her feel insecure about herself. When Ray meets Foxy for the first time, Father Tom introduces her and Foxy says, “Your Christine’s kid…The one whose father is a nigger” (Dorris 44). Not only does Rayona have to deal with racism her mother is always putting her in bad situations. There has been quite a few times where Christine has attempted to leave Ray and told her that she wanted to commit suicide. One time in the very beginning of the story Elgin goes to visit Christine in the hospital, Rayona had not seen him in 5 months and Christine did not want to tell him about her sickness.
Many events in the book were very sad and touching when Foster the main girl in the story keeps a pillow case just with her dads stuff in there after he died in the army, she lives with her mom and her boyfriend named Huck who isn’t as nice to Foster at most times making her call him Elvis thinking of himself as a really good singer making Fosters mom the backstage singer and some days he even hits her mom at times and finally one day they get into a fight making Huck break into their house and hitting her mom so badly that they have to run away from their house very fast finding a safe place with Huck coming behind them with his car chasing them and soon they outrun him and arrive to West Virginia. Foster a 12 year old girl with a huge love for baking can bake almost anything possible to bake but she only has one problem she can’t read at all when she starts “it’s like my brain starts to close
Isobel shared similar traits to Diana, her apartment was just as messy, she was always seeking the approval of others and was also psychotic which is displayed by her obscene prank phone-calls in which she would verbally abuse whoever was unfortunate enough to be on the other end of the line. Isobel’s final quest for identity and change leads her to Mrs Adams house (Isobel’s next door neighbour during her childhood), Isobel finds out that her parents lied to her in order for her to be scared of Mrs Adams after Isobel wrote a poem about her cat. Mrs Adams tells Isobel that she loved the poem and that her cat ‘Smoke’ later died and followed with ‘’well, nothing lasts for ever, as they say.’’ Isobel replies with ‘’I hope they are right’’ implying that Isobel hopes the mental pain inflicted by her mother will not bother her any longer.
