Difference between my use of Speech and Writing There are many differences between the ways I use speech and writing in everyday situations, there are many different reasons as to why this variation on the speech used occurs. Depending on whom I am talking to the formality and tone of my writing changes, for example: When sending a text to a friend or sending an email or other type of instant message my tone is informal with the use of many colloquialisms and slang terms. For example shortening words, using apostrophes and skipping unimportant short words out such as “The” and “or”. This is because usually there is no need for formality in a text message so I have no need to make sure that it is entirely understandable by everyone, so long as the person receiving the message understands it that’s all that matters in a text, also because you know the person you are sending the message to there is far less need to be formal as they already know you well enough to be on friendly terms. Text messages and instant messages are more often than not a completely spontaneous form of writing, this means it closely resembles speech and can lead to you typing or sending something you’ll regret at a later date, due to getting caught up in the heat of a conversation. If I was writing a letter to someone I didn’t know that well, I would be almost completely formal as I would be looking for a professional approach and a “chatty” tone would not be appropriate for a letter to the bank. In this situation I wouldn’t use much abbreviation and would try to keep the letter as professional as possible. This is in heavy contrast to the types of writing I would send to friends. When at home and with friends I tend to speak informally, this is because I am comfortable with the people I surround myself with in these situations and they know me well enough to understand my
