Prison time is an effective deterrent to a point, with some people more time is needed. Prosecutors should have the option of using a variety of punishments in order to minimize crime. The most fundamental principle of justice is that the punishment should fit the crime. When someone plans and brutally murders another person, it would seem that justice would be better served if they too were killed as they had planned to kill another human being. Our justice system shows more sympathy for criminals than it does victims and this should be altered.
Another major point is that our justice system shows more sympathy for criminals than it does victims. DNA testing and other methods of modern crime scene science can now effectively eliminate almost all uncertainty as to a person's guilt or innocence. Prisoner parole or escapes can give criminals another chance to kill. This contributes to the problem of overpopulation in the prison system. Has one ever thought of the victim’s family when the whole court cases are going on?
The three strikes law was implemented in 1993, it was created to act as a strong deterrent as well as to identify and incarcerate habitual offenders by enforcing minimum sentence lengths. The advocates of the law propose that it keeps violent and serious criminals behind bars therefore reducing crime rate. Those opposed suggest it overfills our prisons with aging criminals that eventually hamstring our economy. Overall I believe the three strikes law does more good than harm, and Ill examine articles that go deeper into these matters. According to Eugene H. Methvin, a large portion of violent crime can be prevented with an effective strategy of identifying and incarcerating the individual, keeping him/her off the streets; saving society much
Incarceration further reassures society and the victims that a criminal will receive a fair punishment. Moreover, incapacitation or incarceration protects society from career criminals, and criminals who pose a serious threat to members of the community, but the fact of the matter is by doubling the prison term for armed robbery is not going to correct or solve the underlying issues that force one to commit the act of robbery and in return, the prison systems will continue to
Capital punishment should be a tool used on many serious felons instead of life in jail. Capital punishment would lower crime rates and subsequently lower overcrowding in our prisons. Also, United States prisons cost taxpayers an exorbitant amount of money to fund and keep running. The number of inmates in jails today has steadily increased
I think we are so much quicker to throw people in jail even for petty things such as minor drug charges. Obviously we cannot let things like this just slip by, but it sort of goes back to the first idea that I talked about, is the purpose of the justice system to rehabilitate or punish? Maybe if we decided to rehabilitate more criminals we wouldn't have such a problem with overcrowding in
I do not believe this bill should be made effective. Yes, this bill may be efficient. It may make the individuals convicted of armed robbery a person for society. They can take a better advantage of the programs offered to them, but I believe that the cons listed outweigh the pros. If the prison term were doubled, what would happen to the rest of the inmates?
Prison rehabilitates criminals and once freedom, money and life’s luxuries are taken away from white-collar criminals then they will learn that committing such crimes are not worth prison time. Alternative sentences should not be given because being isolated from the world will be more effective then giving them house arrest because they will not be in the luxury of their own
Looking for new ways to save money in the midst of persistent societal needs like privatization of intuitions. This also has prompting many state and federal bureaucrats to reconsider how they punish their criminals. Forcing them to look for creative ways to trim down the heavy burden that stringent sentencing laws and an excess increase in incarceration that has lead to increased taxes on taxpayers. Unfortunately, officials like to tout that crime rate falls because tough sentences are given; even when demography or other factors may point to another reason, they feel the tough sentences are demanded by the local citizens to solve the problem. Prison is an excellent way to keep dangerous criminals off the streets, but the more people you lock up, the less dangerous each extra prisoner is likely to be.
Americans will save a lot of money from taxes, the prison population would decrease, and the government would realize how harsh and unfair their sentencing system is. Americans would much rather old drug dealers who want to improve and change their lives back on the streets rather than having a murder or a rapist back on the streets. If the drug dealers really want to change their lives and start a new life then they should be able to get out of prison. Most of the inmates have already served more than enough time then they actually deserve. Americans need to start sticking up for what’s right in their country and should stop being bullied by the government.
