Throughout the story you can tell that Hester never truly loved Roger Chillingworth. Hester refuses to tell anyone who she committed adultery with but since she had a child, Pearl, while her husband was not in America, everyone knows and she is judged harshly (Hawthorne 74). Her punishment for this sin is that for the rest of her life she will have to wear a scarlet letter ‘A’ on her chest that stands for adultery (Hawthorne 60). John Proctor committed adultery a young girl named Abigail Williams. Abigail was John and his wife’s, Elizabeth’s servant.
John denies Abigail saying that it will never happen because he loves his wife. Their relationship isn’t the strongest but love is there. This so called love drives Abigail to accuse Johns wife of witchcraft so that she is to be hanged for committing sins against the bible. She thinks that killing Johns wife would make him love her even though John has told her otherwise so many times already. Her actions actually hurt John greatly throughout the story.
Not only does she deny doing witchcraft, she also manages to accuse Tituba of having full responsibility while she is the one who starts the whole thing. At the end of the chapter, she also frames some other citizens, saying that she sees them with the Devil. Her affair with John Proctor is furthermore exposed to the audience. Betty, Reverend Parris’s daughter, reveals that Abigail attempts to drink blood as a charm in order to kill Elizabeth Proctor, who is John Proctor’s wife. Moreover, when Reverend Parris confronts Abigail about being fired by Elizabeth Proctor, Abigail denies any wrongdoings.
Satan: They all committed suicide because of your idiocy. Creon: Well that’s rude. Satan: I am Satan, I’m not sugar and spice and everything nice. Three innocent people died. Antigone, because she didn’t want to wait for death.
Even after she cured Lucas of the curse the witches put on him, people were still skeptical saying “Hechicera, Bruja” (pg 104). After the incident when Tenorio brought an angry mob claiming that Ultima was a witch that laid a curse on his daughters, the kids at school prosecuted Antonio saying “At least we don’t have a witch around our house!” (pg 145) The men trying to capture Ultima tested and failed to prove
As both Danforth and the judges oppress over him, Proctor cannot bring himself to sign, and ultimately leads himself to his own death. “How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (Miller 133) In saying this, Proctor emphasizes the emotional strain which people were brought under during the trials. The reluctancy of Proctor to sign away his name allows him to make a much greater impact on the trials, and ultimately serve as a martyr against the corrupt system. The belief that people should not have to lie is one which comes up a lot in Proctor’s life.
John Proctor meets his tragic death and this puts all the other characteristics together and makes him a tragic hero. John Proctor was about to confess to witch craft but when it came to losing his name and sacrificing his friends, he refused to confess. He decided not to confess a lie even though it meant he would be hanged. This was done in act four when John Proctor says .".. because I lie and I sign my name to lies.
Powerless to do anything, Abigail resented Elizabeth for that and her jealousy grew. After the dancing in the forest incident, realizing how people listened and believed in her stories, she abuses that power. She manipulated the entire town and even her friends. She tells lies about them, accusing them of witch craft. She took revenge on Elizabeth and accuses her of being a witch.
The play by Arthur Miller, The Crucible, is full of irony, false accusations and ignorance. The townspeople of Salem are so blind to the truth that they let a group of teenage girls destroy half their town simply by making up stories and accusing others of being witches. These puritan people were so obsessed with cleansing their town of evil that they let that fear of witchcraft run their lives, this also makes it very easy for people to get what they want very easily, whether it be land or revenge, these people were corrupted. There are many conflicts throughout this story Thomas Putnam is a wealthy farmer in Salem he is also greedy, and holds a grudge against Francis Nurse for preventing Putnam’s brother-in-law from being elected to the office of minister. He wants the riches without the work.
Proctor tries to prevent Elizabeth from being hanged. He also admits that he lusted with Abigail. Elizabeth lies to the court, telling the first lie she has ever told. She lied to save her husband though. Abigail is accusing everyone of witchcraft to clear her name.
