Arthur Miller is the author of The Crucible, in where he wrote about the Salem Witch Trials that took place in Salem Massachusetts. It shows how terrible some people were and others who stayed true to themselves as strong individuals. Three very popular people from the story who expressed strong individualism are John Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, and Giles Corey. All are strong but for different reasons. Each character makes a contribution to the hysteria of Salem in 1602. A man who believed in his religion but a man with a flaw which he gained by cheating on his wife is John Proctor. He kept it to himself until his wife Goody Proctor is accused of witch craft. He admits publicly he had relations with Abigail Williams to stop hysteria. Being a strong individual backfires and ends up being accused for witch craft. Stands up and dies for his cause and stays true to himself then living a lie. He is hanged publicly, which many people were upset about. The saint of the town is Rebecca Nurse; she is a mother of 11 and a grandmother of 26. She stands up against with craft and says all the girls are pretending. She later on is accused of witch craft but denies it. She refuses to admit to a lie or tattle on her neighbors to consorting with the devil. Rebecca is also hanged for staying honest to herself and god. The last person to express strong individualism is Giles Corey. 83 years old but filled with wisdom. Self taught himself the law with an education. He knows enough about the law to not answer about witch craft and charges. Knows he will become guilty because everyone else is. Even though he was tortured he refuses to answer and his dying words were “more weight”. He also dies with being a strong honest individual. Arthur Miller creates strong individuals in his characters who stand up for themselves. John Proctor dies for his beliefs. Rebecca Nurse dies for her
