Film and novel are two different artistic forms, but they could exist in same topic. The novel reveals imaginative art through rhetorical devices and words. The film is a type of vision art. It could express the content of novel clearly by using the different sequences from novel. In this article, I will illustrate The Joy Luck Club as a guide for comparing the distinctive advantage between watching and reading. The Joy Luck Club is a name of novel, at the same time, it is the film’s name, it tells interlaced stories about generational and cultural clashes and communication between Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-born daughters. The novel brings eight heroes’ psychological changes to readers. And the film adapted from novel make audience self-understand the emotions which the four stories represent. First of all, film presents its own character by actor’s words and actions and yet novel is more tendentious to the description of psychology and particular. They bring different sensuous experience to audience. The film mainly depends on vision and hearing to presenting the theme. At the beginning of the Joy Luck Club, the monologue dubs in background music, as a result, this type brings fresh sensation to audience for melting into film fast. In the novel, readers have to imagine by themselves’ thoughts as the piano piece Pleading Child which Jing-mei played. Readers read the novel to imagine how excellent or terrible Jing-mei played, however, writer used so considerate words to describe the Jing-mei’s nervous psychological changes. So these changes could reduce in distance between readers and novel’s roles and feel writer’s intention or emotion easily.
