It is rare to find perfect harmony in both. Usually, I try to read the book before I see the movie because I find it disappoints me in the reverse. Fully capturing the essence of a novel on film can be very challenging. Novels, in general, offer more background and insight and allow more time for character development. The best way to decide if the mediums are closely related is to do a side by side comparison and see if the movie can hold the same value.
He is still thus in the movie, but is more whiny, and annoyingly so. Putnam, also, seems to have a personality change. In the play, his personality is not so domineering as in the movie, where he is bordering on psychotic. His role seems to be made larger and more significant in the movie, which presumably accounts for the change in character representation. Throughout reading Arthur Miller's play and watching the movie I have come to understand why we separate church and state.
Through Nowra’s play the ideas contrasting delusions and realisms are explored in a way to keep the audience in limbo. Theatrical devices have been put in place to ensure the viewers look beyond the stereotypes the mentally ill have been given in society. The play within a play adds complexity to these “normal people who have done extraordinary things, thought extraordinary thoughts.” Also the use of darkness and the burnt out theatre are important devices in distinguishing between illusion and reality. The play within a play is a device used to remind the audience that they are watching a play. The reality that the audience are watching characters rehearse the opera ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’ causes the audience to reflect, upon their own ideas about love, fidelity and whether being loyal to a political idea is more important than being loyal to a person.

(264) Classical narrative form is commonly known as linear narrative which refers to stories told in a single line with logical order and ends with an assured conclusion, usually seen in traditional Hollywood films.

By Act 2, Nowra let the audience see the humanity in the patients using the play within the play by allowing us to see their back stories and why they are in the mental institution, testing the audiences prejudices about the mentally ill as well as the reality of mental institutions. The stereotype that all people who are patients of an asylum are ‘loonies’ and dangerously violent was dismissed to a certain extent for Doug was seen as an extreme danger to everyone and Cherry and Henry did show signs of violence. The end with Lewis pulls the audience back to reality after such a successful night by not giving the audience the happy ending that was to be expected.
