The characteristics of the tropical equatorial rainforest are a result of a mixture of the outcome of human activity and as a response to climatic conditions. These rainforests are found in four main regions; Central/South America, Southeast Asia, Australia/New Guinea and West Central Africa all roughly between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. These areas are evergreen with a very small annual temperature range of 2-4 degrees, this is as they receive intensive sunlight all year round due to their position on the planet in relation to the sun. Throughout the year, there is heavy rainfall which can exceed over 100 inches per year, which results in a high average humidity of 80%. As a result, the forest adapted to survive these conditions in a number of ways through multiple adaptations of the flora and fauna. Plants have adaptions that help them to survive in the area that they live and grow in. Adaptations are special features that are developed in order to allow the plant to live where they do. These adaptations would make it very difficult for the plant to survive in a different place, so it’s pretty lucky there are strict immigration laws for plants. These adaptations take a very long time to occur and take over 100 generations for the smallest of changes to become apparent, so to suggest that human interference dictates the characteristics of vegetation rather than climatic conditions is purely ludicrous. The vegetation has responded to the climatic conditions in a number of ways. The trees, unlike their counterparts within deciduous forests, do not shed their leaves. This is as there is moisture present all year long so they do not need to worry about conserving it. In fact, they have adapted to shed water, the bark is relatively thin and smooth allowing water to exit the tree with ease. Furthermore, this thin and smooth bark prevents
