The Changing Office Culture The last 30 years have seen a lot of changes in office culture. With changing technology and attitudes, people are approaching their work life in a different manner. Offices have become more homely and comfortable, more jobs are allowing people to do their work elsewhere, and office socialising is becoming encouraged as a way to boost productivity. The following are key ways that office culture is changing. New Technology Technology has completely revolutionised the average office space, and thus has had a large influence on office culture. Office design has been changed significantly with the increased use of computers as they have become smaller and more flexible. Increased mobility is perhaps the single largest benefit of having more computers in the office because, with the help of the Internet, workers collaborating on the same projects no longer need to be in the same room, or even in the same city. So even though most jobs out there now require people to take a computer course that will help them do most of their work, there is still a prominent element of flexibility that they provide. Oversharing Culture The next generation of employees are growing up in an environment that encourages and rewards the sharing of personal information and, as a result, many come to crave the countless small details that comprise life. This need for connectivity will make it difficult for them to adapt or thrive in traditional workplaces that are impersonal and far from their comfort zone. Instead, they will thrive in workplaces that allow them to express themselves and interact with their peers on a more personal level, which will force office culture to evolve.
