“The Challenges and Responses of the Nineteenth Century” is the first chapter of a book written by Diosdado G. Capino. It talks about the struggles, the effects and the changes in the nations, not only in the Philippines but also in other lands, conquered by foreign colonizers. The nineteenth century was indeed an era of changes and responses. Major changes affected men and society. One of the important changes was the struggle for nationalism. Another is the gradual spread of democracy. Before the war broke out, there was already this sense of nationalism among Filipinos. Our countrymen suffered enough from the hands of the Spanish colonizers. The former felt the wrongness of the situation they were in. Every Filipino during the nineteenth century who sought reform, peaceful or armed, was being nationalistic. The industrialization among nations was also an important change. Its advantageous effect is diverse – improved transportation and communication, production of goods, banking and finance, etc. During this century, people became interested with science. I agree with the statements in the first paragraph under the topic “Nations Struggle for Nationalism.” People would be willing to serve and develop pride in their country, if they know their own country. Just like our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. He experienced racial prejudiced.
