There was a massive divide in the North from the South. The North had an industrial revolution in the late nineteenth century, although Italy’s industrial development was always going to be limited, as they did not have enough key resources such as iron and coal. The poorer side of Italy, the South, was full of peasants and no industrialisation, therefore the South suffered from a bad economy and poor living conditions. In the South, 0.01% of the population owned 50% of the land. That agricultural industry in the South was so corrupt that farmers gained no profit from their livestock and crops, therefore was inefficient and moving backwards.
Many people did not have money to spend in businesses and businesses also took out loans that needed to be paid back. However, without business they were not making any money resulting in business failure. This also hurt the economy. After the war the price of grain dropped and farmers
So what causes this worldwide dilemma? Primary factors that lead to poverty comprises of overpopulation, lack of knowledge and competence, unemployment and high standards of living. These are not all the causes but these are some of the leading causes. One of the lead causes of poverty is overpopulation. A certain place can only cater a certain amount of people.
The Economics of the Poverty What is Poverty? Poverty in America is the state of being poor, and one lacks the means of providing material needs or comforts. Unfortunately, I have to say that this is still happening in many parts of the world. Poverty is said to exist when people lack the means to satisfy their basic needs. Poverty has been associated, for example, with poor health, low levels of education or skills, an inability or an unwillingness to work.
As Strayer, Gatzke, and Harbison state in their textbook The Course of Civilization states “The basic trouble was that very few inhabitants of the empire believed that the old civilization was worth saving… the overwhelming majority of the population had been systematically excluded from political responsibilities. They could not organize to protect themselves; they could not serve in the army… Their economic plight was hopeless. Most of them were serfs bound to the soil, and the small urban groups saw their cities slipping into an economic decline.”(DBQ 2, Doc 1) What these men mean is the majority of the people (which were poor serfs) were excluded from political responsibilities. In addition, they could not protect themselves or serve in the army mainly because they were too poor (in order to be in the army, the people had to be wealthy) and the urban patricians saw their city fall into an economic downfall. What also led the downfall of the Western Roman Empire were the rise of Christianity and the large size
Meals in soup kitchens don’t follow very good health guidelines either. In fact, many that are in poverty face bad
Overpopulation will be biggest problem of the 21th century. Overpopulation means any given species cannot exceed the carrying capacity of the land it inhabits. Because of the pressure overpopulation, people don’t have enough water, food, and living area. This is the reason they develop the vast forest area used for farming and clear the area the people to live. For example in areas of Nepal, they cut down the vegetation to provide wood for heating and construction, the fertile topsoil is eroded by rain because it is now without the protection offered by natural vegetation.
Nutritious food is also difficult to get in the Central African Republic. 1. The people of Central African Republic are facing an extreme water crisis. Not only this, but the lack of basic infrastructure and political instability contributes to being an LEDC country. There is a lack of time, money, people and skills to find or filter clean water.
Corruption, school-dropouts, and alcoholism are to blame for most of the poor. The land the Native-Americans live on is hard to harvest; therefore farming for food and vegetables can be hard. Property rights on the reservation tend to be non-existent, and weaken prosperity for this culture. Most of lands that Native-Americans live are communally, no one is able to get a clear title to his or her land, making is hard to borrow money or establish credit for improvements or investments they will benefit families. This is called tragedy of the commons, when everyone owns the land no one really owns the land which results in rundown housing due to lack of investments on the property or housing.
Lack of clean water can directly affect the life expectancy in any country. Another problem is that many citizens in developing countries simply do not have the facilities
