Canada and the Industrial Revolution: Unforeseen Consequences Industrialization and resulting urbanization occurred later in Canada than in other countries, lagging behind Britain and the United States. Real expansion took place between 1840 and 1890 (Hindman, 446). Industrialization and urbanization transformed Canadian lifestyles, created socially and physically stratified cities that promoted social injustice and inequality. The negative consequences of industrialization then spurred actions to rectify the problems. The Industrial Revolution began in England in the middle of the 1700s.
In recent years, Canada has received many immigrants because of its advantageous social, environmental and economical conditions. Grady (2009) reports that Canada’s immigration levels have remained very high, since the Mulroney government relaxed its immigration policy to new immigrants in the mid-1980s. A total of about 250,000 new permanent residents and 113,000 temporary foreign workers were welcomed to Canada in 2006 (p.28). When immigrants arrive at a new place; they have to start everything from the beginning. Most will experience a transition period and during this period, they have to establish their own self-sufficiency within the new social structure.

This business approach culminated in the Bank of Montreal in 1817, which lead to the creation of the Committee of Trade in 1822. The economy hadn’t bloomed until the 1860’s, but then found that insurance companies, stocks exchanges and the banks drove the financial industry. Montreal was arguably the capital of business in Canada at this time, with their largest competition coming from the Upper Canada region (Toronto). After generations of relying on trade and commerce, Montreal had gained recognition as a major industrial center.
