I know the name sounds a bit morbid but, but despite the moniker, these are amazing, and I think your family will love them. This recipe has been in the family treasure trove since my great, great grandma’s day, and it is still a family favorite. I have considered changing the name, but since this is the way it was passed down I don’t have the heart. It is my understanding they got their name because it is a dish that was prepared to bring to the family of someone who had passed away, because it made a lot, and stored well. Please take my advice and don’t wait until someone dies to give them a try. When I had a young family, long after my Mama, which is what I called my mother’s mom passed away, I decided to gather all her recipes into a “Family Cookbook”. I come from a good old fashioned Irish Catholic family that believed butter was a separate food group, and it was not a meal without meat and potatoes, so this was a natural in my household.
