The industry also has positive network effects in that as the console user base increases, so does the number of video game cartridges sold. 3. Describe + evaluate Nintendo’s strategy in each of the following areas. Why did Nintendo take the actions it did? How did these affect the value created by the industry?
Reginald Lowery September 30, 2011 General Psychology (R57-F11C) Research Assignment Alex’s Story After watching Alex’s story, I question why kids are being medicated. Nearly everyone has heard of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and probably knows a child who has it. This isn’t surprising since approximately six million children, or two per every classroom, are currently taking stimulants to modify behavior. It is also likely that many have been in heated debates about ADHD and medication. Are doctors too quick to prescribe medication?
For example infants that are born severely mentally retarded share some of the same qualities with anencephalic infants such as lack of motor skills and bowel or bladder control. There are also concerns with using the organs of anencephalic infants like if the organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys will successfully continue to properly function. When an anencephalic infant is born there is some autonomic brain function and some reflexes however the organs can’t be removed until the infant has been certified dead. There is a need to save infants lives that are dying from liver, renal, and cardiac diseases but is it right to take the life of an existing infant because of their abnormality? What makes one patients life more valuable than another and more importantly the infant with anencephaly has a moral right to life.
There was an inability to deal with many different stimuli at once. They had a low tolerance for frustration and had difficulty structuring information. They were easily overwhelmed by new information (Rist, 1990). The same symptoms were repeatedly seen by the researchers who have followed crack-exposed infants from birth. The New York Times recently reported: The most severely affected children suffer from seizures, cerebral palsy, or mental retardation.
In addition to that playing video games, too much sugar, fast past lifestyle and lack of self control are also invalid causes of AD/HD. However, heredity, brain deficiencies and other biological causes are reasons why some children have AD/HD. Prenatal factors such as alcohol consumption or smoking while pregnant can also cause AD/HD. Brain deficiencies can be defined as damages to the frontal lobes which controls cognitive, emotional and motor responses, the cerebellum which controls motor planning, motivation and behavioral inhibition and/or basal ganglia which also controls behavioral inhibition. Once it is seen how AD/HD occurs in children it is very clear to see why they have as much trouble as they do with focusing in
Luria studied children’s adaptation of suffering brain injuries or strokes. Also, Oliver Sacks includes statements by Freeman Dyson who believed “defects, disorders, diseases, in this sense, can play a paradoxical role, by bringing out latent powers, developments, evolutions…” referring to how disadvantages of neurological injuries can bring natural developments or evolutions of people. At the age of twelve, I had fractured my toe which devastated me. A passion of mine has been dancing since a child and this accident involving my toe prevented me from enjoying my hobby. However, as silly it may sound, I learned to become more appreciative of health when my toe was fine.
4) The three sides of the health triangle are family/ social, physical, and mental. They all affect each other for instance if you get a bad test score and are failing a test you might not get enough sleep. Then if you play a sport you might not have had enough sleep to be able to practice or play the next day, and you might want to stop talking to your family. If you get a good test score you will hopefully get enough sleep and be able to play in the game. When you play great in the game you will be confident and be able to talk to your family with no problems.
New statistics suggest that between 3% and or 5% percent of children have ADHD, in the United States. That statistic shows that in a classroom of 25 students at least one or two students have ADHD. The controversy steps in with many parents and teachers, thinking that over medicating a child with this condition is not helpful. Also there have been some negative results from long term use of Ritalin. Ritalin helps people focus and relax by regulating and calming the central nervous system allowing people with ADHD and ADD the ability to focus and have better impulse control.
There are multiple uses of the 3D images of patients with substance abuse. Many of them are put on posters in education facilities for drug and alcohol prevention. In some cases it can stop the addiction due to the patient’s reaction and anxiety after seeing these images. Therefore, can change their attitude and influence them to want a healthier brain. There is no right way to heal the brain from addiction, but SPECT imaging is a vital tool in helping people to appreciate what is happening with their brain.
Damage to the central nervous system caused by the disease led to poor attention, impulsivity, and over activity in children who survived, researchers began to look for signs of brain injury in other children who had similar behavioral profiles. By the 1950’s, researchers began to refer to this disorder as “minimal brain damage,” which was
