The toxic waste can be managed by treating it well and burying it underground. Also new technology has made it possible to run Nuclear Power plants with thorium. To use thorium the Nuclear Power Plant needs to be driven on the Accelerator Driven System. This system may have a large price tag but it will pay itself back within fifty years or so. Thorium compared to Uranium creates less toxic waste and also unlike Plutonium (the by-product of uranium) the toxic waste created by Thorium will only takes 500 years to be declared safe.
“You want to save the environment by building renewable energy, but in Vermont the only viable places for turbines are high-elevation ridges,” says Lukas Snelling, director of communications for energize Vermont, (Hosansky, pg.#24). Not only will it be expensive to build these turbines, but it may be detrimental to the environment as
Over consumption has led to many cures and medicines being created, and has made the world a better and safer place then it once was. The Buy Nothing Day would only hinder the progress that mankind has made in keeping the environment intact. The way of life in the 21st century has and will be defined by consumerism. Consumerism has lifted nations out of recessions and created millions of jobs and opportunities. The Buy Nothing Day is just a way for environmentalists to voice their theories about how to fix the environment.
“Pennsylvania legislature approved Act 13, known as the Unconventional Gas Well Impact Fee Act.” (Rabe 336). This shows that hydraulic fracking is included into state constitutions and has a right to operate. The Pennsylvanian legislator Corbett stated “thanks to this legislation, this natural resource will safely and fairly fuel our generating plants and heat our homes while creating jobs and powering our state’s economic engine for generations to come” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 2012) (Rabe 336). Showing that the government is coming to the side of hydraulic fracking because they see the economic benefits. This does not only debunk the claims of critics but it strengthens the argument that hydraulic fracking is worth it.
The last time the Federal Government has passed any law affecting fracking was in 1988, before many modern techniques have been adopted [ (Bergeron, 2011) ]. Fracking, although very beneficial and the best process of attaining natural gas, is just too dangerous. The U.S. government is still debating this controversial topic, and very likely will be for many months to come. Safety is very important to maintaining a strong and efficient country; the maintenance of this goal should not be difficult with government regulation of fracking locations. It is very simple - the United States Federal Government needs to take a good hard look at their current regulation on U.S. fracking locations for the safety of our American
He also points out the fact that people should focus on the present consumption of energy, rather than the future for energy conservation. Nader said that people should start conserving energy right now, such as not using electricity when it is not needed. Shellenberger has the argument other alternative energies such as coal cause over 3000 deaths. As the demand for energy increases with revolutionized technology, Shellenberger believes that nuclear energy would be much better compared to other alternative energies. Nader comes back with the fact that we should focus on conserving the alternative use of energies given to us today and not to create power plants that have additional risks caused by nuclear energy.
James Doher Informative Speech Outline Proposition: To persuade the audience to oppose offshore oil drilling. Intro: Oil and gas are a necessity to everyday life; however, there are safer ways to extrude these chemicals than what has been done in the past. Stop offshore oil drilling or make it safer for the environment. There are many other ways to obtain oil without harming the environment. Where were you April 22, 2010-Earth Day, just 2 days after the BP oil spill, and how did you help sustain the Earth?
Western society should sincerely consider overconsumption as a major threat to humanity. Society needs to focus on the environment and the earth we live on because it is what sustains human life and the natural habitat. Since we live in a time where alternative technologies which aid in cutting back consumption are available; We should all take the incentive to start using them. The burning of fossil fuels should decrease and be replaced with energy saving technologies, as this will significantly reduce fuel consumption. It is evident that society has resources such as solar and wind power available.
A Fracking Problem Drill, baby, drill, has been the mantra behind the ever-present need to find cheaper, more efficient energy. The most recent solution to our energy dilemma has been hydraulic fracturing, a process that may be causing more harm then benefit. While the natural gas produced from fracking, as the practice is nicknamed, is a cleaner alternative to both coal and oil, it still releases carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere promising no relief from the dangers of climate change. In addition to the climate change issue, the process of fracking is being investigated for claims of methane contamination of groundwater sources and possible negative geological effects, including human-induced earthquakes. The dangers
Back when the “Duck and Cover” film came out the government was limited to what they could do to prevent a nuclear war. They were limited on what systems they had that would help notify when a nuclear war was about to take place. Now technology is so advanced that we would be aware of things like that and are a lot more conscious of any upcoming attacks. I’m not saying it’s impossible for terrorism to happen, but I am saying that we have a lot of highly updated technology that helps us feel safer in case of any terrorism attacks that were to occur, unlike decades
