Research Strategy Paper on Nicotine Addiction Amanda Reed Gen 200 February 18, 2010 Dr. Hobson Research Strategy Paper on Nicotine Addiction Nicotine dependence is the most common form of chemical dependence in the United States. Each year nearly 35 million people make a concentrated effort to quit smoking. Out of those 35 million people less than 7% succeed in abstaining for more than a year. Most smokers start smoking again within days. Nearly 70% (32 million) of current adult smokers said they would like to quit smoking completely.
You would think if I could fight a Heroin addiction, I can quit smoking. One thing that I know that would benefit other people if smokers quit, is second hand smoke. “Secondhand smoke is associated with disease and premature death in nonsmoking adults and children. Exposure to secondhand smoke irritates the airways and has immediate harmful effects on a person’s heart and blood vessels. It may increase the risk of heart disease by an estimate 25 to 30 percent…” If we could ban cigarettes all together, I bet the amount of cancer problems we have will dramatically lessen.
On average, smoking during pregnancy doubles the chances that a baby will be born too early or weigh less than 5 1/2 pounds at birth. Smoking also more than doubles the risk of stillbirth. If a person smokes a pack of cigarettes a day during pregnancy, it will shave about a half-pound from a baby's birth weight. Therefore, Smoking two packs a day throughout your pregnancy could make the baby a full pound or more lighter. While a half a pound may seem like it wouldn’t make a difference, stunting a baby's growth in the womb can have negative consequences that last a
This drug significantly reduced cholesterol from 40 percent to 72 percent when given at two-week intervals. It was also given at four-week intervals but the effects were not nearly as significant. However, “Six patients, all receiving REGN727, stopped the therapy due to adverse events which included headache, injection site reactions, and diarrhea” (Curley, Ann, CNN, 2012). Those side effects would likely scare anyone. That is why the government needs to step in and offer a grant for these companies to dig deeper into their studies and come up with something that has less side effects.
The long term affects causes the heart to beat 20 to 50 beats per minute. The lower blood pressure and the higher heart rate can increase the chances for heart attack. Marijuana contains more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco. Research has found that THC hinders the body’s immune system from fighting
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women; it is also the disease that all women fear the most. Breast cancer can also occur in men, but it is far less common. In the last thirty years, doctors have made great strides in early diagnosis and treatments of this horrible disease and in reducing many breast cancer deaths.
First the pro side, the first main issue is the fact that the 32 million Americans that don’t have health care will now have access to health care coverage. Many Americans can’t afford health care coverage and this policy lowers the cost so that more Americans will have the opportunity to get the coverage they need. Another pro is that people with preexisting conditions can no longer be denied coverage. Insurance companies have been getting away with denying people the coverage they need because they either get sick or because they have a preexisting condition and this policy puts an end to all of that. Lastly, the amount of personal bankruptcies will be reduced.
Smoking cigarettes is by far the main contributor to lung cancer. Cigarette smoke contains over 60 known carcinogens. The time a person smokes, as well as the rate of smoking, increases the person’s chance of developing lung cancer. If a person stops smoking, this chance steadily decreases as damage to the lungs is repaired and cancer causing agents are gradually removed. Tobacco companies are not responsible for what people do in their free time they are simply making a product that people like and making money in the meantime.
Running Head: Texas smoking bans are unconstitutional Texas smoking bans are unconstitutional Elizabeth Gibson Tarleton State University Elizabeth Gibson Texas smoking bans are unconstitutional In a heart-rending blow to the rabidly anti-tobacco Toledo Blade and the anti-tobacco operatives who shriek for prohibition, the city of Wauseon voted not to impose a smoking ban on restaurants and bars. Despite a recount showing that the margin of those voting no to prohibition had increased meaning that over fifty percent of the people didn't want something, this operative plans to take her demands again to the city council. Although she should be shown the door since the voters have clearly spoken, she will relentlessly clutter
Secondhand smoke is especially harmful to young children. Secondhand smoke is responsible for between 150,000 and 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections in infants and children under 18 months of age, resulting in between 7,500 and 15,000 hospitalizations each year, and causes 430 sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) deaths in the United States annually. (California Environmental Protection Agency, 2005) The Smokeless…Campaign will focus primarily on decreasing exposure of second hand smoke to tribal members especially children. The information collected from surveys has identified the need for decreasing second hand smoke exposure. The number of children and adults seeking medical attention for health conditions related to exposure to second hand smoke is rising.
