The Art of Thinking Essay Increasing brain power is not a typical task that crosses everyone’s mind, although it is an essential tool to have in life. Since the brain is the center of the body, knowing your intellectual capacity is a very important entity for most, if not all human beings. In the early 20th century, a measure of intelligence was developed called the intelligence quotient, better known as IQ. The test simply results in a score, which is compared to an intelligence scale. Knowing a score for IQ does not suffice; people want to know more. They need to know what their thought processes are, how their thoughts function, and if there is more than just their way of thinking things through. The Art of Thinking by A. Harrison and R. Bramson classifies thinking into five practical categories based on the results of the inQ assessment results. It results with a score in each of the style categories: the synthesist, idealist, pragmatist, analyst, and realist. The category in which you receive the highest score is the style of thinker you are. Upon my completion of the assessment with a 64 as my highest score in a category, I discovered my style was a Pragmatist thinker. The pragmatist, stereotyped as “The Politician”, is adaptive and has a wide ranging view and non-complex ideas which is why they tend to go with “Whatever works”. This makes them best in complex, incremental situation especially when brainstorming around tactical issues. They are sociable, humorous, enthusiastic, agreeable, and enjoys lively give-and-take. Pragmatists focus on payoff and seek the shortest route to it. They are innovative and good for detecting impacts, tactics, and strategies. I agree with the assessment that I am a pragmatist. Majority of the characteristics definitely apply to me. The ones that I felt were most like me were innovative, sociable, humorous, adaptive,
