The Adventures of Joe Camel and the Killer Clown In America 400,000 people die a year due to obesity, this is the second leading cause of death only behind smoking. This statistic explains why fast food is such a thriving business. In this case fast food is guilty of making Americans fat, lazy, and not to mention killing us. Although tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death in America, it is actually dropping year to year, whereas obesity is on the rise and will soon be the leading cause. In my argument I will compare and contrast tobacco and fast food and I will show how tobacco has changed affectively and how fast food needs to do the same. My culprit for fast food is “The Killer Clown” also known as Ronald Mcdonald and he will be investigated with his colleague Joe Camel. These culprits have committed a terrible crime by giving American false information and making us trust them. What they are doing is killing people and they have to be stopped. We have already stopped Joe Camel so we will use our experience with him to apprehend “The Killer Clown”. Forty years ago lung cancer and other diseases plagued the United States, creating a major health problem. So in 1965 the U.S. Congress came up with the Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act, which banned all advertising of cigarettes in the broadcast media, and also required a health warning on all tobacco products. Four years later the Congress created the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act, which banned smoking in certain places, made buying cigarettes harder for children, and also significantly increased excise taxes on tobacco (Engelhard). These Acts where put into place because the health of the American people was at stake and in my opinion this is what needs to be done to fast food. For tobacco these Acts did wonders because fewer than half as many adults smoke today as when the country
