Texting is Ruining Social Skills It has been argued that many people currently prefer texting rather than a phone call. While some people consider its low cost, others argue that texting is convenient because it can be done anywhere including when travelling or in a meeting without any interference from anyone. Today, people also choose to socialize through text on their smart phones and social websites. It is fact that even recent generations such as younger people are more involved in texting. Let us not forget that even older people are engaging in texting as well. Irrespective of how convenient texting is thought to be, it is causing more harm than good. In fact, there is evidence that it ruins social skills among other issues. Social skills facilitate any type of interaction and communication with others. Texting is ruining social skills, which are important to building personal relationships, because there is no body language to show any emotion. This is because excessive texting is ruining people’s ability to communicate effectively. Some people are afraid of real intimate conversations and hide their true feelings behind a cell phone or computer. Texting via cell phones or chatting via a computer does not show a person’s emotions since one cannot determine whether the other one is happy or sad. Through text messaging via cell phones and social networks, people can become more individualized, distant, afraid, and indifferent. In fact, most of the people who like texting are afraid of calling or have face-to-face conversations because they are scared of facing others. Texting takes out the formal element of conversation so it is easy to do so mindlessly (Turkle 198-11).
