j Abstract Enzyme inhibition is important because it helps cure sickness by injecting the correct inhabitant. PTU was experimented to discover what type of inhibitor it is to Catechol Oxidase (Potato Extract) by seeing if there is a color change when the two interact. Results show that PTU was not a competitive inhibitor, saying that it did not bind to the Potato Extract (Catechol Oxidase. Introduction Enzyme inhibition is important in life because many medications contain enzyme inhibitors, some being competitive inhibitors and other noncompetitive. Competitive meaning it would bind to the active site therefore blocking it decreasing enzyme activity, noncompetitive being that it would just simply bind elsewhere and or change the shape of the enzyme causing no feedback.
Firstly In 1971 cannabis was reclassified by parliament and became a schedule 1 drug. This means it was viewed as not being medicinal. In 2002, Cannabis was reclassified again as a Class C drug meaning that it is seen as less harmful compared to other drugs such as heroine and cocaine. This made people think it was all right to smoke the drug however it was still illegal. Several studies show that cannabis may be used for certain medical conditions.
This is supposed to be what gives Garcinia Cambogia extract its potential weight loss properties. There are several nutritional supplements on the market that contain Garcinia Cambogia extract. The Garcinia Cambogia extract supplements are mostly advertised as HCA, calcium- potassium salt of HCA, or various other formulations mentioning the Hydroxycitrate Acid. The actual amount of the Garcinia Cambogia extract actually containing HCA is questionable, because this supplement is not FDA regulated. The fact is, an individual does not really know how much of the active ingredient is in each capsule, if it has been combined with some
The reagent we use is Benedict’s reagent. Reducing sugar will show positive result while non reducing sugar will not. To test the presence of starch in our next food test, iodine is use. When starch is present the iodine added on it will change its colour from yellow to blue black. For the food test that use to determine the of presence protein we use Biuret test instead of Million’s Test.
Introduction The alleleopathy of garlic (Allium Sativum) is a direct or indirect harmful or beneficial effect of one plant. “The smell that produces the cloves of garlic when it’s crushed is produced by volatile, a chemical that evaporates into the air” (college, 2009). The crushed clove garlic smell hinders other plants which keeps them away from competition with the growth of the garlic (Allium Sativum). Other plants other than garlic such as broccoli and carrots have different effects on the environment. In Kingsborough Community College at Biology lab department
Quinine-containing beverages may cause health problems Updated BfR Health Assessment* No 020/2008, 17 February 2005 Quinine is a bitter-tasting, crystalline white powder. It is obtained from the bark of the cinchona tree and belongs to the group of alkaloids. In medicine quinine is used to treat malaria and nocturnal leg cramps. In the food sector, quinine is used as a flavouring mainly in beverages like bitter lemon and tonic water. When larger amounts of quinine are consumed, it can constitute a health problem for some consumer groups.
In this instance, although the experts admitted to a set of symptoms which could be attributed to a diet of gluten in non coeliacs, the actual cause and treatment was not very well understood with the only link being to a study done back in April, 2013 as a possible explanation (Gastrojournal 2013). Could a more recent study be found online which explained the current experience of those who claimed to be NCGS and would their eyewitness testimony to a notable improvement in their health when abstaining from gluten, be anecdotal evidence enough to establish that NCGS was
Scorpion Poison Cabbage Experiments carried out between 1989 and 1993 by the Oxford Institute of Virology tested the effectiveness of cabbage infused with scorpion poison as a natural pesticide. Scorpion poison was trialled as a natural alternative to spraying the cabbages with chemical and artificial sprays, which may infect the cabbage and cause sickness in the people eating them, as well as doing damage to the environment. The scorpion poison was modified so as not to harm humans and only do damage to the insects that ate the cabbages. However, the study conducted to test whether the poison was able to be harmlessly ingested by humans was not tested on people or normal healthy cells, instead it was tested on breast cancer cells, which could lead to altered results and a false conclusion that the poison is actually harmless. The authors of the study had this to say about the effectiveness of the toxin on insects: “L]ow toxicity with an LC50 of 18.4 μM was recorded in artificial diet incorporation assay in which the toxin was consumed by the testing insect through feeding.
The participants involved in this study were tested for pesticide levels. Pesticides can be absorbed into fruits and vegetables, and leave trace residues. Foods were tested for pesticide levels as well as bacterial contamination and Escherichia Coli contamination. The study shows that eating organic foods in place of conventional foods lacks strong evidence that organic foods are (Nordqvist, 2012) (Nordqvist, 2012)significantly more nutritional than the conventional foods. The study did however find that consumption of the organic foods may help reduce exposure to antibiotic resistant bacteria as well as pesticide residuals.
Though many scientists and other health professionals claim it to be safe I still don't trust these products. In 1981 the little blue packets of NutraSweet appeared on our restaurant tables, and by 1983 NutraSweet was being widely used in diet sodas. But as soon as this wonder of nutritional science appeared on the scene, there was great controversy over its safety. A component in NutraSweet, and other artificial sweeteners like it, known as aspartame was an extremely questionable substance and still is. Unlike many additives, aspartame consists of two naturally occurring compounds, although in a way nature never intended.
