WORKSHEET – UNIT 16 Task 1 – State the advantages and disadvantages of authentic and created materials. Which kind of materials would you favour for a class of intermediate students? Why? Advantages of using authentic materials include: -They are more interesting and motivating because they are real. -Students build confidence when they understand them. -They can be geared to the interests of specific groups of students. Disadvantages of using authentic materials include: -Students may not be consistently exposed to the materials, therefore making it difficult for them to associate the materials with their functions for future references. -Students may associate the characteristics of the material with all materials within that category. Example: Students reading an authentic t.v. guide thinking that all television guides are similar. Advantages of using created materials include: -This allows teachers to develop their abilities for material production. -They can replace or supplement materials from a course book. - They can be graded to the level of the students unlike authentic materials. Disadvantages of using created materials include: -They have not been tested to measure effectiveness. -Students may find difficulty refferensing them. Task 2 – What do you consider to be the advantages and disadvantages of using course books with a class? Advantages of using course books include: -Students usually expect to use books. -Using course books are less time consuming than designing a syllabus with created materials. -Course books usually provide a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary, and skill development. -The materials have normally been tested. -The material is usually attractive and appealing to the eye. -Teacher’s course books usually offer good ideas for inexperienced teachers.
