Chapter #1 Assignments Tesco manuscript – speech Welcome ladies and gentlemen, it’s a great pleasure for me to be here today and I want to thank you all for coming. My name is Terry Leahy. I am the CEO of Tesco. I will be speaking about the development of retailing and what it takes to run a retail outlet today. I will also mention green consumerism. I am going to speak for about 15 minutes and then we can spend the last 15 minutes on any questions you may have regarding the subject. I kindly ask you to wait until the last 15 minutes to ask your questions. When I was a kid, I enjoyed going grocery shopping with my mother. She had four boys and I was the most willing to go shopping. There were no supermarkets at this time, but these post-war council estates were surrounded by a few local shops. The local shops were definitely convenient, but very expensive. A lot of my family’s disposable income went on food, and it was a constant worry. No one in the estate ever threw any food away. We had to shop everyday and that was on the top of all the household chores. People nowadays forget when they look back on the good old days that it took hours to shop, wash and clean. Tesco has become highly successful but much unloved. We’ve been accused of ruining local shops, blighting green fields and homogenizing everything from cheese to cherries. I feel that it’s very unfair because supermarkets have been extremely liberating for women especially. They can now shop once or twice a week for the basics. Few people have the time to spend two hours chatting to the grocer and the butcher. Tesco is classless; we have rich people coming in to buy toilet paper and poorer people coming in to buy cereal. Running a retail outlet is not always easy. It takes commitment and hard work, just like any other job. It’s not just having a lot of products in the store; it’s about analyzing
