Emery 1 Me, You, and Tattoos Who, what, when, where, and why is the question at hand. Who should get tattoos? What should you get tattooed on your body? When is the right time to get a tattoo? Where should you get a tattoo? Why should you get a tattoo? There are many things a person should think about before getting a tattoo considering this piece of art will be with you for the rest of your life. This is probably the reason why the law states you have to be eighteen before you can get a tattoo. Besides, what teenager do you know that could answer those questions and be 100% about the answer? Not many! “On Teenagers and Tattoos” written by Anders Martin references to just that and gives reasons why tattoos may be so alluring to teenagers. Martin explains three main reasons why teens may decide to get tattoos, Identity and the Adolescents Body, Incorporation and Ownership, and The Quest of Permanence. Throughout this piece I will further discuss Martin’s reasons, my view on tattoos, and the impact tattoos have on today’s society. In the first section, Identity and the Adolescent Body, Martin explains that tattoos are a way of making a statement and creating individualism for themselves. “Teens often feel prey to a rapidly evolving body over which they have no control, so self-made and openly visible decorations may restore adolescents’ sense of normalcy and control.” (Martin, 20) In other words, teens feel as though they have absolutely no control over their bodies and how they will develop, so getting a tattoo gives them a sense of controlling something on their body. Along with wanting to feel a sense of normalcy with their body, teens see tattoos everywhere which Emery 2 makes the idea more appealing.
