The article, “On teenagers and Tattoos”, written by Dr. Andres Martin, is an expository piece examining the motivation, significance and function of tattoos for teenagers. Dr. Martin explains that by understanding the reasons or motivations behind tattoos, adults and parents can better understand and get to know their children. The audience that Martin is trying to address is not only families that disagree with their teenagers having tattoos, but is also addressing the adults who tend to frown upon the individuals who have tattoos. In this text, Martin addresses the growing fad of tattoos, and why our youth is turning to a more permanent way of expressing themselves. The goal of this article was to inform adults of the many different motivations of teen tattooing in order to reduce the assumptions many adults make.
O n Te e n a g e rs a n d Ta tto o s Andres Martin Tattooing and piercing have an almost magnetic appeal to many teens. While they may be seen as adornment by adolescents, they can become a battleground with adults. A psychiatrist examines the motivation and func tion of body sculpting by contemporary adolescents. The skeleton dimensions I shall now proceed to set down are copied verbatim from my right arm, where I had them tattooed: as in my wild wanderings at that period, there was no other se cure way of preserving such valuable statistics. -Melville/Moby Dick Tattoos and piercing have become a part of our everyday landscape.
Not too long ago tattooing did not experience the popularity it does today. Looking back at how people once perceived tattoos years ago and how they are becoming more and more common in today’s society shows how times are changing. It is obviously clear that tattoos have broken through their mysterious outlaw image; although to some, may be still viewed as rebellious behavior. Our culture has come a long way in what is seen as conservative and have exasperated many other ways of rebellion and more importantly ways of expressing themselves. Tattoos can now be worn proudly on the outside to show how one feels on the inside.

A Sense of Who I Really Am Ashley Cribbs Baker College Composition 1 Valerie Haas Monday’s and Wednesday’s A Sense Of Who I Really Am. When it comes to adolescents and tattoos, I can understand why parents get upset about them. The majority of teens don’t take much into consideration like they should when choosing a tattoo they want. Most often they get one merely because they think it looks cool or they feel peer pressured in an effort toward a group affiliation. I read a rather intriguing piece by Andres Martin called On Teenagers and Tattoos.
The once taboo subject is no longer as unaccepted as in past decades. Nowadays more and more people are sporting tattoos with fewer people looking down on them. "I still haven't officially told my parents and I got it in 1996, 11 years ago. It was sort of rebellious but not really because I could cover it
This class would be the first step in preparing the kids for driving. The class would be mandatory before you are able to apply for a permit at 17. Also, we should have a law passed that you have to hold a permit for a total of a year before you can be able to get a personal license. This may help in forcing the kids to have more practice on the road driving with another licensed driver before going out there on their own. The more practice and advice you can give a teenager before they are allowed out on the road ways can increase the chances of saving a few lives from driver’s without the same amount of practice.
In this article it gives facts and opinions, “on teenagers and tattoos”, for instance, when talking about the reasoning for which adolescents tattoo their bodies would be an opinion, no one can really say why someone chose to do something, you can get a good idea by doing surveys and questionnaires but everyone is different. “imagery of a religious, deathly, or skeletal nature, the likeliness of fierce animals or imagined creatures, and the simple inscription of names are some of the time-tested favorite contents for tattoos” [61] The author of this article also used a lot of intellectual jargon in his writing, and may have been directed not only towards other psychiatrists but to well educated-upper class citizens. The author of this article must’ve been well educated in the psychology field and with child development, to be able to come up with such great findings about the cause and effect with adolescents
Similar sentiments can be used when defining Generation Y; although, the event, in this case, is far from peace and love--as many use the September 11th attacks of 2001 (i.e. 9/11) as the moment that solidified the teenage and coming of age society. However, I think Generation Y can be defined more simply and less tragically by its very need to be defined; essentially, many teens and twenty-something’s define themselves by a definition, a word or phrase that makes them who they are. So, in essence, is conformity the modern interpretation of individuality? Is Generation Y defined by nothing more than its very need to be a definition--an -ism or a label?
Getting extreme tattoos can also be a sign of deviant behavior or mental health problems in young adults. Sometimes extreme tattoos are a form of self-injury or self-harm which resulting from teens trying to express their negative feelings, seeking attention, or help. Extreme tattoos are a major sign of such problems in young adults today. Minors should be prohibited to have tattoos and young adults up to 21 should be prohibited to have exposed or extreme tattoos. There are many problems and complications for tattoos for minors and young adults.
