Teenagers and Ethics What is ethics? Well it is really hard to find a true meaning for ethics where it could differ from a person to another person or on a large scale a culture to a culture. Everyone wants to live an ethical life, but that is not very easy to accomplish. Why do some people choose some unethical decisions over ethical decision? Well maybe it is the pressure of failure, like college students, or maybe it is because of being deprived of something they have always wanted, like the people who do the egg donor. In the past chapter, we have been reading and discussing essays about ethics. We read “A whole lot of cheatin’ Going On” by Mark Clayton, and “Grade A: The Market for a Yale Women’s Eggs” by Jessica Cohen. The two essays discussed college teenagers who faced some ethical decision and ethical challenges. The idea and our belief of ethics vary over time for everyone. In the essay “Grade A: The Market for a Yale Women’s Eggs”, Cohen tells us that “an egg donor” ad ran for two weeks in the Yale daily news (190). The couples who posted the ad were willing to pay excellent money for a perfect candidate. Cohen fitted into all the criteria except for the SAT scores, which was negotiable. Although she was rejected because she was not pretty enough, Cohen decided not to do it because she simply valued herself. I would never accept the idea of egg donor or sperm donor in my case, which I think of as a crime. I also feel doing that would interfere with God’s will. Only the rich are capable of receiving egg donors, thus it would eliminate the mostly perfect embryos, and leave nothing for the poor people. Rich people would have everything from fame to great education, not to mention the great looks. This would gradually cause an ending to the middle class, where the majority of people are.
