Teen drinking Although, there is a law saying that alcohol can only be sells to the people over the age of 20, Thailand still provides easy access to alcohol because of its lack of control. This leads to a serious problem of teenaged alcoholism, which needs to be addressed in today’s society. Alcohol is an overwhelming substance that can and will affect the mind and the body of the consumer. “Alcohol messes with the electrical energy of the nerve cells that send messages to the brain about thoughts, feelings, and learning (www.bookrags.com).” There are at least three main consequences that come with alcohol which are car accidents, intoxication, and crimes. Car accidents are the leading cause of death among people ages 15 to 20. More and more people under the age of 21 die every year from car crashes involving underage drinking. Because alcohol causes inefficient control of mind and body, drinking and driving becomes extremely dangerous. Drunk driving not only cause death to the driver but it can also cause death to other innocence people. Thailand allows teenagers above 18 to test for driving license, which is the starter of teens drunk driving problem. However, young and inexperienced drivers should not be drinking in the first place, but they do it all too often and many of them drink either before or while driving. Thai statistic in 2007 stated that 20 percent of teenager age 15 to 19 died because of vehicle accidents and drinking and driving cause almost 20 percent of them (www.csip.org). Another effect that comes with teenaged alcoholism is intoxication, which can also lead to death. Intoxication includes a number of stages. “The first stage is ‘Happy’, the second ‘Excited’, the third ‘Confused’, the forth ‘In a Stupor’, and lastly the fifth ‘In a comma’ (www.tellmed.org).” Alcohol intoxication occurs in stages based on the blood alcohol level.
