Melanie Quiroz Professor Armstead ISS1120 (MWF 8-8:50) 22 February 2012 Technology and Society Technology is the universe of tolls, means, and methods through which we interact with our environment (105). Over time technology has impacted lives all over the world. Through new innovations and inventions, many things have improved, for example, food is preserved better through the invention of the refrigerators, cures to deathly diseases were found, and food canning. However, these are not the only inventions that have made an impact; many innovations were created through the Industrial Revolution in the 1800s. Through this revolution the changes in economic and social organization have not stopped to present day. But, the common question of today is if technology has taken over our lives to the point where it benefits us socially, economically, educationally. To demonstrate that technology has impacted our lives in such a way that it is our only answer to things, I performed an experiment: to not use a piece of technology that I use all day everyday (iPhone) for a period of twelve hours. The key movement that initiated such immense social change around the world was known as the Industrial Revolution. This was the name given to the sum of all the changes in economic and social organization characterized by the replacement of hand tools with power-driven machines and by the concentration of industry in large establishments (107). This started in England around 1760 where people began to use power machines for production and to build factories. By, the 1800s the revolution made progress. In the English revolution brought about textile inventions and an improved steam engine. By the 19th century, the machine industry and factory system began to develop in the United States.
