Technology: A source of a sedentary life style that contributes to heart disease In modern times, human beings have grown to enjoy the comfort availed to us by breakthroughs in technology. These technological advancements have changed our daily lives and how basic activities/tasks are being carried out, through technology we have been able to bring down the barriers of space, distance and time. It`s important to know that advancement in technology is well appreciated and the benefits of having these technological advancements cannot be understated. It`s also worth mentioning that advancement in person computing and electronics have aided sedentary living in turn increasing risks of getting cardiovascular diseases. A sedentary existence predisposes us to obesity, hypertension, the metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and most types of cardiovascular disease, whereas regular exercise decreases the risks of developing all these diseases James .O and Lauren (2004) . Using me as an example, the estimate below shows the amount of time I spend working in front of the personal computer monthly: Number of hours in a 30 Day month (24Hrs*30days) =720Hrs Number of Hours spent at work (8Hrs*24days) =192Hrs Number of Hours spent at home doing personals in front of computer (3Hrs/day*30days) =90Hrs Total time spent in front of computer every month= (90+192) Hrs=282Hrs From the above estimate, I use staggering 39% of my time monthly sitting in front of the personal computer and it`s quite evident, as I have gained few extra pounds due to the nature of my job. This is the case for a lot of professionals, who hardly have time for physical and social activities. It is indeed a great irony that the disease consequences of physical inactivity, itself, are a negative by-product of the modern labour saving devices that reduced the amount of physical activity needed to
