Technological Advancement of Maps Along with human civilization, maps have advanced quite drastically. A long time ago, most people would use a large, folded-out, paper map to try and find where they are going. Now-a-days, people commonly use resources such as a GPS device, MapQuest, or Google Maps to keep track of where they are going on the road. That fact that having to buy a large map from a store is largely diminished is a strong point towards proving how much technology has advanced maps over time. An example of the monumental leap maps have taken due to technology is the GPS, or “Global Positioning System”. What this does is it tracks your GPS device (which is located in your car) by sending a signal to satellites orbiting the Earth, from there it will track the exact, pin point location you and your car at currently at on Earth. You type in where you want to go on the GPS, and it guides you there by voice and a small, sometimes 3d, visualization of a map on the screen. No longer do we need to actually read to know where we are going, we just need to know where we plan on going and have the GPS guide us there. Sadly, the GPS cost money, but not all of technology’s solutions to dated maps will burn your wallet! MapQuest.com has given internet users around the world free, accessible maps for years. MapQuest was founded in 1967, they started coding maps by request on computers back then, but it was until 1996 the website starting to become what it is today. MapQuest offers free maps to anyone with an internet connection, a user will simply type their starting destination and where they are going to stop and it instantly makes a map them that is available to print.
