This essay is about the inter-professional working relationship between healthcare professionals on a medical ward. It will also explore my teamwork experiences during my third year clinical placement. In this essay I will give clear example of how inter-professional teamwork has developed my skills, attitude, and knowledge and how this has also helped me to develop and strengthen my potential as an inter-professional member. I will also describe and analyse what I experienced during my placement, and how team work has made an impact in my life.
However I understand that inter-professional approach is the relationship between two or more professionals working together, combining their skills and knowledge to enhance the package of care given to the patient or client Barriet et al (2005)
In nursing teamwork is emphasized and valued and every member must work together to meet their patient’s needs. Odgen (2007) highlighted that teamwork is accomplished by making sure that cooperative behaviour is positively reinforced. However teamwork requires interdependence, the working together of a group with a common objective Parker (2011). So nurses and healthcare workers must work together and find ways to improve patient health and satisfaction. It is crucial that all team members work together and communicate effectively. Any changes in the patient’s status, whether deterioration or improvements should be shared between team members.
Finkelman (2006) defines teamwork as people working together who have common purpose and working toward common goals.
The main purpose of team roles is to work together cooperatively in order to improve whatever they are doing. They also share ideas and build each other and I am going to use a practical example from my placement of the teamwork between nurse, dietician and a patient.
