Leaders have to set the standard by being empathic, supportive and use a range of different leadership styles to develop and maintain the team, they also have be fair and consistent, as workers that feel they are unfairly treated by a manager will not show loyalty and will do the minimum. The leader also has to demonstrate capability and experience, as having workers that are more highly achieving than the leader breeds resentment. Tuckman (1965) described the stages of team development as ‘Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing. As teams travel through these stages trust, respect and understanding of individual’s strengths and tolerance of their weaknesses is established. This process allows individuals to learn about each other personalities, coping strategies and response to pressure, allowing for bonds between members to be formed.

It is of utmost importance to carefully choose the people we associate with, as we are greatly influenced by our own peer group because they can assist in developing a strong individual identity. We usually feel more secure when we know that we have others around us who share our goals and care about our progress. Being part of a peer group fosters the idea that we are accepted and loved for who we are. This is why change is often difficult for certain individuals because suddenly, you are cut off from your regular group, who you have become so familiar with. We sometimes seem wired to adopt the goals of the people around us, particularly when we develop a close relationship with them.

Many of my strengths seem to be based on leadership skills and keeping true to standards and traditions. These are good qualities to have but can also get in the way of outside opinions and accepting of new ideas. Finding a balance between the two spectrums will really help develop a more balanced person in my opinion. The test that examines more in depth of leadership styles produced a somewhat predicted outcome.

NVQ 3 Adults What Methods are effective in forming, maintaining and ending relationships with individuals and key people? It is important to be aware of the individual’s level of communication and ability and to use there chosen form of communication wherever possible. As I have been keyworker for many individuals I think they need to be aware of the clear boundaries that are put in place and this also needs to be consistent within all staff that will be supporting the individual. This is very important to form positive relationships whilst still keeping professional boundaries in place. You need to be a good listener, patient and be prepared to put in the effort as it can sometimes be very frustrating especially if there are communication difficulties.
• Professional relationships you develop with people you support are another matter; you are required to provide the same quality support for all, not just for those who share your views and beliefs. • Knowing what you need to do and achieving it successfully is not the same thing. • Working in the health sector, you are bound to come across people with views you don’t agree with, and who never seem to understand your point of view. • Awareness of differences, your reaction to them and how they affect the way you work is a crucial part of personal and professional development. • If you allow your own preferences to dominate your work with people, you fail to perform to the standards set by the UK regulating bodies, they require workers to respect and promote people’s individual views and wishes.
As well as being fun, team activities increase knowledge and allow teams to develop weak areas of expertise as well as enhancing team support, encouraging mentoring and developing leadership skills. An independent team is where each member of the team is able to work effectively by themselves to complete the same task, the leadership style used by this group would be democratic because they would have to listen to each other’s ideas and all equally contribute. These kinds of teams are in permanent
