Running Head: TEACHING AT ITS BEST: GOOD TEACHERS Teaching at Its Best: Good Teachers and Teachable Moments from Piaget’s Theories Alicia Evans Liberty University Abstract This is a study of good teachers and what makes them that way. It explores the characteristics that make an effective teacher. It describes the skills that a teacher must obtain and gives examples of how these skills can be learned. It discusses how the theories of Piaget lead to teachable moments within the classroom and gives an example of his developmental stages. Finally, it presents practices a good teacher should implement in order to be successful. Teaching At Its Best: Good Teachers and Teachable Moments from Piaget’s Theories The time has come where there is an emphasis on good teaching. Legislation has been made that focuses on “No Child Left Behind”. The current president Barack Obama has even stressed that, “We should expect more from students, reward good teachers, and stop making excuses for bad ones.” American standards of education have been shown to be inferior to other countries throughout the world. How can we improve the education of American scholars? The answer lies in teaching and learning. America must train teachers to be the best. They must challenge students in order to move them forward in their development. Teachers need to take advantage of every teachable moment and use strategies that will keep students engaged and focused on learning. Piaget theorized that people develop in stages. It is during these stages that the teachable moments occur. Can you describe a good teacher? Can instructors be taught how to teach? How can teachers use what they know about the development of people to help
