She tells me she has been taught by her teacher things like how to spell the word, “butt” and how to look for leaks by locating brown spots on the ceiling. After school programs should be a place where children can continue to learn and grow within educational boundaries. It should not be a facility used only for babysitting or supervision until the parent arrives. These government funded programs should be taken more seriously by the administrators by implementing a better academic curriculum, hiring educated staff, and promoting higher learning. An academic curriculum is something that I feel should be in place during after school programming because during this time of day you can count on a child having a wondering mind that may lead to danger if left idle for too long.
My Philosophy of Classroom Management Classroom management is a term used by teachers to describe the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly despite disruptive behavior by students. This term can also refer to the prevention of disruptive behavior. Many consider this as one of the most difficult tasks for new teachers. The basis for classroom management involves clear communication of both, the behavioral and academic expectations, as well a cooperative learning environment and proper time management. In order to successfully maintain proper order in the classroom, we must engulf a vast amount of actions, such as classroom climate, parental involvement, environment, student expectations, rewards and consequences, classroom procedures, and student motivation.
The professional development meetings inform the teachers of how to incorporate rigorous learning into their lessons and also explains what the district expects to see from the staff. To meet the goals of our action plan, the teachers need to align their lessons with the core curriculum. Professional development helps them stay on task with these strategies. Principals also use out-of-district professional development classes to refine any weaknesses of the teachers in our school building. For example, if a teacher has a hard time with classroom management, our principal will suggest a professional development to address classroom management skills for that particular teacher.
So how do you actually implement these strategies into your classroom? The answer might be to have a good classroom management and strategy plan. They would present it to their students the first day of school and then the students would know what is expected of them. Rules in a classroom are very important, the teacher teaches them to the students and the students should follow them without any consequences. Such rules could be: One-student participation or strategies to keep them on task.
At the start of this module the topic I found of most interest and relevant to teaching was building a positive classroom climate. I feel that if a student and teacher can work in a positive classroom climate all the other elements of teaching will fall into place .In order for a positive learning climate to occur the teacher must be the role model in the classroom. Unfortunately building a positive classroom climate cannot be achieved by one teacher alone, a whole school approach is needed and it must be implemented in each classroom by each teacher within the school. If this approach is only implemented by one teacher students will get confused which will thus lead to disruptions within the school. A classroom’s
Running head: Benchmark Assessment EDU 536-Week 8 Classroom Engagement and Management This essay will give instruction of how a classroom should be managed. Classroom management may be influenced by a large variety of things. The classroom is where a teacher should be able to teach kids in a structured setting with few distractions. However, this is not always the case. There are many negative situations which often happen in a structured setting, such as the classroom, that causes teachers to have to do more than just teach.
• Allows teachers to focus on learning instead of discipline. • This takes away from teaching time because you are preparing rules and procedures. Kagan, Kyle, and Scott's "Win-Win Discipline" • It helps bring out the potential of the students even through disciplining them. • It is very clear for expectations that are passed to the students. • It stresses the importance of using the classroom to help the students overcome negative attitudes.
Another way to collect data is to talk to the parents of the students when they arrive to pick up their kids or in the school meeting for parents, then the teacher can inquire if the student is also showing behavioral problems at home or if the problems only occur in the academic context. Collecting and reviewing data before implementing specific interventions is extremely important because it prevents overreactions and personal bias of the teacher. An intervention needs to be grounded on enough evidence that there is a behavioral problem and that it is not a singularity. Then the teacher can use the records to support his intervention. Common Behaviors in Young Children Three of the most common behaviors in young children that the teacher might consider for modification or replacement include: Talking to friends or doing activities when the teacher is asking to pay attention.
They often enter the classroom with prior knowledge that both they and the teacher can use to their benefit. (http://www.suite101.com/content/how-do-children-learn-a149772). No two children are a like, therefore no child will learn in the same manner as the next students. Children learn and develop at a different pace, but as long as the students accomplish the same goal, who’s to say what works best for students and what way should not be used. Knowing that they are different ways in which a child can learn a teacher should try to incorporate each style within there lesson plan so no child is left out.
Next, the parents could have their children review their work at the end of every week. This procedure would help keep the parent and the child up to date with their work. Many times the child may not understand some of the work, so it is good for a parent to ask them questions. If the parents are having trouble answering their child’s questions, the next best thing to do is hire a tutor. Hiring a tutor is a way to improve the child’s educational experience.
