The phrase was established when the new field house was built and named after one of the most influential coaches of KU basketball history, Dr. Forrest “Phog” Allen. Mentoring involves a lot of discussions and open conversations between the mentor and the mentee, therefore the mentor should know how to effectively get the message across to the individual with ease. This is especially important during the giving of feedback to the mentee. The mentor must be able to relay feedback and remarks constructively and positively without demeaning the mentor’s self-esteem. Good communication skills, such as active listening and questioning skills are essential for the mentor to ensure that learner fully understand what being discussed.

Being a good leader means that the leader knows how to serve the people he is working for. Leadership is another trait that can’t be easily developed, but only with thorough diligence and dedication.
A mentor will be part cheerleader, part coach, part teacher, part student, and part guide and part listener. Mentor’s guide, inspires, and encourages their mentees. Many qualities can make a great mentor; among these include the willingness to share knowledge, expertise and skills. As well as consistently displaying a positive attitude and presents themselves as a positive role model. The individual should have enthusiasm in their field and in the mentorship process.
