The Taj Mahal The Taj Mahal, a monumental tomb built by the great Shah Jahan, born January 5, 1592. Jahan was the fifth Emperor of India between the years of 1628 to 1658. Before his ruling he was known as Prince Khurram. After his many years of ruling in India people considered the time of his ruling to be the “Golden Age,” because of all the success and achievements he brought forth. Since a young age Jahan was well cultured and knowledgeable about different cultural arts throughout India. He was also very important to the architect world considering he was one of the greatest architects of Islamic architecture. Not only did Shah Jahan contribute to the architectural and emperor world, but he also came up with a new form of currency in 1629 making all coins from silver, gold, and bronze. Being he was a successor he came from a rich family and also had a larger family himself. Jahan had nine wives and several children. Although he was legally wed to several women of Asia his loyalty and intimacy is said to only be with one woman who out shinned them all, Mumutaz Mahal. She was given this name by the great Jahan intentionally because of its literal meaning, “the chosen one of the palace.” Mumutaz came from a great family herself but her life with Jahan was very supportive and compassionate as she stood by his side during his entire life and ruling. Between Shah Jahan and Mumutaz Mahal alone, they both conceived fourteen children alone. His successful and memorable life through out Asia ended on October 1, 1666 at the age of seventy-four due to illness and severe intestinal health problems. Shah Jahan will be forever remembered, especially throughout Asia as a great architecture, ruler, inventor, husband, father, artist and more.
