Systematic Formative Assessment is a new way to Motivate Students in HK In the 1980s, frequent testing, being widely adopted by a majority of secondary schools in Hong Kong, was regarded as the most effective way to help students in terms of learning. It follows that secondary school students have to deal with loads of tests every week, in different units and various subjects. Be that as it may, a new method of assessment has recently been brought to attention that it may have more advantages over the old and traditional one. Systematic formative assessment, a more learner-centered based approach, may be of much use for the sake of assisting learning. Portfolios, which is a typical method used in systematic formative assessment, help students identify their weaknesses in different aspects. According to Wortham (2005), the content of the portfolios is the facts for students to achieve the ambition of the course. Take writing skills drilling as an example. Teachers can use working portfolios or assessment portfolios to assess students' writing ability. Students should submit several composition drafts for a single topic, followed by specific advices given to them after each draft. Owing to the fact that different pupils have different area of weaknesses, like some of them may be fully understand how to write an proposal in an appropriate tone, style and format, teachers can know which parts they are weak at and give particular advices to individual students. Through the use of portfolios, students can get rid of their own problems and improve their performance during the course of processing. On top of that, one of the best reasons for using portfolios is that it can meet the learning needs of particular students (Popham, 2005).
