Now because of his stubbornness he wants to kill her and her sister that is not even involved. This king has no compassion or heart, and has no problem executing his own family if he feels the need to. Creon’s own son does not agree with this decision and continues to state that “The people feel sorry for Antigone. / They say it isn’t equitable she must die / A Horrible death for such a noble action” (Sophocles 18). The
Eteocles died with honor and Polynices was publicly shamed. Because of this, King Creon forbids anyone to touch the corpse of Polynices or give him a decent burial (Moss and Wilson). Antigone and Ismene argue about whether or not they should bury Polynices’ body. Since Ismene decides to not partake in the illegal act, Antigone secretly performs a ritual burial. Creon finds out about this and sentences Antigone and locks her away with little food to live on.
Antigone knows that Creon knows what she has done and states, “I gave myself to death, long ago, so I might serve the dead.” Her brother not being buried changes the relationship she has with her uncle because her uncle now wants her to suffer and to e tormented for something she thought was right. Anti gone dies because she kills herself in a cave she can’t escape from. She hung herself and the first person to realize she was dead is Creon’s son Haemon. Haemon was devastated and wanted to kill the person responsible and he felt that there wasn’t a force on the planet that could stop him. Creon is told by Tiresias that if he doesn’t change the way he is bad things are going to happen.
She will be the man here” (519). This quote explains Kreon’s irritation on Antigone. The very moment Antigone buries her be loving brother’s body Kreon wants to take action with killing her because she disobeyed his law also Antigone’s sister, Ismene, because Kreon believes she was part of it too. Kreon believes if he does not kill Antigone he will no longer be one of the best rulers that people will look up too. This quote is important because it explains how Kreon begins to commit hubris.
When Curley's wife screamed, he didn't know how to make her stop except to do what he did, but he did not intend to kill her. Curley, of course, is also looking for a way to achieve revenge for Lennie's crushing his hand so he will definitely try to kill Lennie in the most cruel way possible. He says he will "gut shoot" him. George must save his friend by a mercy killing.
Richard is bitter, deformed, not loved, and sickened by peace, so he will set his brothers up for their death and rise up. Richard misleads Clarence first to get him placed in prison because his plan is to get rid of the king before Clarence has to die. It is amazing that it is obvious that Richard is the
In Antigone, by Sophocles, The characterization Creon proves the quote to be true through his irrational decisions and edicts. His abuse of power is shown through Creon by forbidding anyone to give Polyneices an honorable burial and not listening to the prophet Teiresias. When Oedipus, King of Thebes, dies, his throne is left for his two sons Eteocles and Polyneices. When Eteocles refuses to share the throne, the two brothers go to war. Both are killed in the struggle for power.
Creon is sorry for what he was done, he repents, but it is already too late. He only finds true justice when everything he cared for was gone. Creon’s tragic flaw was that he was resolute; he did not want Polynieces to be buried. He received multiple warnings that this would lead to his downfall. He was put into the position of King.
After finding out who it was that laid the body to rest, he had no choice but to fulfill his promise of killing them to show his people that his first official act as king was a non-compromising one. On top of that Antigone was a woman, and in their culture woman had absolutely no authority above men. Letting Antigone walk away after disobeying his order would not only insult him as a king, but it would show that even a woman could walk over their new king with ease. Through his fear of being seen as a weak king Creon ordered the death of Antigone by sending her into the pit with limited food, so that eventually she would starve to death. Antigone’s was backed into a corner with no way out that she could see at the time and she hung herself, this is the result that
His willingness to slaughter the man for so weak a reason is frightening though. It helps to show how twisted Chillingworth truly is. During the end of the novel though, Dimmesdale thwarts Chillingworth’s revenge plot by telling the Puritan community how he had an affair with Hester. This act absolutely ruins Chillingworth because he no longer possesses the power over Dimmesdale. All the horrible acts he had done in the past were undone, because Dimmesdale "Hast escaped me!"(228).
