Symbolic Frame Reflections Rachael Isenberg EDL/515 Karen Shelton December 23, 2013 Symbolic Frame Reflections Part 1 To what extent are the mission and vision statements employed? In my school, the mission and vision statements are on a district level and have been a bit off-site with the recent change in administration. In addition to getting a new principal this year, our school has had a shift in the population within the small town that our school serves. This has resulted in a little bit of relaxing of certain expectations. During our last staff meeting before our break, the staff discussed how to bring the discussion of character back into our school and creating a new behavioral policy to encourage positive behaviors. I see this shift in policy as a way of bringing our school back to the mission and vision statements that were adopted by the school district. Our vision statement speaks of dedicating ourselves to student success. Our school employs these values on a daily basis, but it is through reflection that we can continue to improve. What are examples of ceremonies and rituals that are common to schools? I have found that most schools share some rituals and ceremonies, regardless of location. These include: 1) Open House, 2) Meet the Teacher Night, 3) Parent/Teacher Conferences, 4) Math/Literacy Nights, 5) Holiday Dinner, 6) Fall Festival, 7) School Dances, 8) Secret Santa, 9) Holiday parties (e.g. Valentine's Day, Christmas, Halloween), 10) Awards Assemblies, 11) Field Day, 12) Spelling Bee, 13) Science Fair, and a few others that I cannot remember off the top of my head. Ultimately, there is a certain aspect of school culture that is similar throughout the educational system.
